This happens to me all of the time "Fuel overflow" I got it down now. All I have to do is sit fill it very very very slowly until I get to the $8 mark and then stop wait a minute and then I can start filling it fast. Normally my tank is almost empty. Mine never had a flap as this overflow problem happend the first day I had my car and I looked down the pipe.

Ok, I was sure I had one when I got the car. But today when I filled up the car, I noticed it wasn't there.

I don;t have a problem with over flow, but now I'm worried about this little metal piece in my gas tank.

Oh well, guess I'm off to talk with my dealer.

Perhaps Mazda has at least 2 different parts manufacturers for that portion of the car. One maker comes with a flap, the other one doesn't, maybe because Mazda did not specify it?

BTW, I don't have one either and I prefer not to make a big deal out of it.

I don't have one either, 02 LX. Man, this is kinda weird. Has anyone had their tank cleaned out to see if it is falling in there?? I think I had on to start with, but am not sure:dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

no flap on mine
not since day one

if that metal flap did fall in.. wouldn't it make a sound every time it hits the side of the thank while the fuel is slushing around in it?
something fell into the tank in my dads car and u could hear it bang the side of the gas tank every time the car moved or stopped... it was very loud too.

bring the car in to the dealer!

Huh? I was a bit worried by your statement too. I went to the dealer and looked at two P5's, no flap on theirs. Then I went to another dealer and looked at one---no flap. Mine? No flap.

I am starting to wonder if it was a production thing? I.E. Some had them, some didn't.

I also do not have a metal flap in the neck of the gasoline tank. From the postings, did they change the gasoline tank design in 2002? From some of the postings some of the individuals had the flap in mid 2001 for their 2002 year vehicles?

Might be interesting if some of the individuals who have the flap will take some digital pics and post for us to see. I will try to take a pic of my gas tank that does not have the metal flap...unfortunately it is raining pretty heavly right now...Seattle...go figure.

I doubt it's based on production date, because I have a P5 made in '01 and it doesn't have a flap (now anyway  ).

I think this is general for all proteges then
I mean, is it possible that each and every one of them fell
and if they did fall, and with our way of driving which
is rapid acceleration/braking and swerving, we should have
heard the metal piece hit the tank wall

I think that comes stock like that, which I personally think it sucks because it is like a safety issue for overfilling

The best thing to do is consult the dealership and the manual,
but as a major issue, I think it should not be a big concern ,

In my view anyway...

I noticed the first time that I filled up my car that I didn't have one.
