Turn signal problems

Hi, I'm new to the forums, and am looking for some help or guidance. I have a 2000 Protege LX and am now having problems with my turn signal. When I flip the turn signal on, neither the display nor the blinkers will flash, but the signal will still be in a down or up position (depending on which way I'm signaling) until I turn. Sometimes when I'm stopped at a light and have my turn signal on, it will stop blinking for no reason, but will not turn off (so I know that it's not because I have the wheel turned, since the lever will not return to place.) I think it may be the thermal flasher because it will still turn on and off as the wheel turns (so I'm relatively sure it's not in the steering wheel,) has anyone else had this problem? If it's the thermal flasher, is that something that I can change myself or is it best to have the dealer change it. (As you can probably tell from my question, I'm not very car-literate.) Thanks for any and all input!

Me? I would buy the flasher unit from the store and 'find' the thing that looks like it under the dash..

? Is it in the fuse block (inside or under the hood?)

Thanks for your response! The fuse box is inside the car, so it should be relatively easy to get to.

If you don't find it - let me know - i will crawl under my dash and hunt it down - it is way easier when it is 'clicking' to follow the sound!
