Thinkin' of goin' FI
Yes I am finally thinkin' about puttin' a turbo in my car.
Engine: ZL-DE Approx HP (currently): about 100 Drive: all-wheel drive GearBox: 5 Manual Engine capacity: 1498 cm3 This is the setup i am thinkin' about using. Now I don't know much, heck, I don't know anything about installin' a turbo or what i should or should not go with but I'm gettin help from my friends here in Trinidad. Turbo and Manifold (will be supplied by friend not sure which one yet) Turbo XS Boost Controller External Wastegate (not sure which one yet) Turbo XS BOV Intercooler (not sure which one yet) APEXi Neo AFC Now my friend told me that i will be goin' with a low boost setup, about 3-5psi. Is there anything i should consider or know about? When the turbo is installed, i'm supposed to get about 175-200hp. I'm not sure how that's gonna happen but i know my friend won't lie to me. I have to talk to him more about this. Please let me hear your comments. |
you wont get 200hp on 3-5psi unless you're running a GT40 or higher series turbo and it would be completely un-driveable because of lag.
Instead of trying to piece together a hodge-podge kit in your driveway I would spend the money on buying Juan's kit www.hiboost.com you can purchase it from www.protegegarage.com Ken (owner) carries all of HiBoosts kits and is known for great service. |
now rod, i'm not sayin' you're wrong but this setup i am goin' with is similar to what guys here do to their civics. yes i know, civics are different than mazdas and i still have to talk to my mechanic if this would be a good way to go because he's very good with engines.
i'll be sure to let you guys know what's goin' on and what i hear from the guys down here. |
Listen to mattty. A kit will be complete and take less time to assemble (no bending/fab work). A kit comes with Juan -who can answer questions. A kit comes with a Warranty.
Costs more, but perhaps cheaper in the long run. |
another thing to keep in mind is proteges have notoriously weak engines (except for yours I think)
Juan's (HiBoosts) kits are very high quality and come with a viable tuning solution....not just a pressure regulator. Sometimes it's worth it to spend a little more money for a product you KNOW works without issue. If you decide not to buy a kit I have a TON of parts here I could sell you cheap... brand new T3 turbo with ceramic coated compressor BEGi FMU flyin' miata voltage clamp apexi air filter (numerous cone filters) t-bolt clamps silicone couplers bosch bypass valves w/ fittings and hoses slim fans etc etc etc. All you would need would be piping and the manifold which I believe is either on ebay or protegegarage.com |
i'll let you know if i need anything from you
as for the turbo, it's a b6t turbo that'll be installed i have some time to wait on thins because it'll be comin' in early february. most of the parts that i'm gettin' is easily available here already but if i need anything, i'll be sure to let you know. |
the turbo I've got will run circles around the stock b6t turbo. If you're interested in power give it a thought.
|
yeah but wouldn't i need to do alot more upgrades to get the turbo you have installed?
what price are we lookin' at here for the turbo you have? also, is this a brand new turbo or used? |
now rod, you're suggestin' that i should go with the hiboost kit
firstly, that would cost roughly the price of a car if i was to purchase that and install it. secondly, that's for the 1.6l protege my car is a 1.5l, 4wd and i was once told that there is no difference to the 1.5 and the 1.6 except for a few minor extras that the 1.6 has and the 1.5 doesn't. my car is also a direct import from japan, so in essence, it's really a familia. i am thinkin' that the hiboost kit may not work. and the reason why i'm goin' with what i'm goin' with, is because these guys know about local/foreign mazda's and wouldn't steer me wrong. what turbo do you have that i should go with? and also, what other parts will i need for the installation of your turbo? e.g. what i listed above already Turbo XS Boost Controller External Wastegate Turbo XS BOV Intercooler APEXi Neo AFC? please give me some info as i am now in the learning process here. |
The turbo I have here is a fresh rebuild with 0 miles. It's in perfect condition and has a ceramic coated compressor housing for cosmetics. It'll fit any turbo manifold that has a T3 footprint. Tell your fabricator that and he'll know exactly what you mean...If he doesn't then walk away slowly.
Basic parts for s imple turbo kit are: turbocharger manifold exhaust (downpipe to stock exhaust usually) small air-air intercooler piping bypass / blow off valve silicone couplers clamps air filter colder spark plugs higher octane fuel fuel management unit (FMU- I have one of these also) voltage clamp (to kkep the stock ecu from pulling fuel...i have this also) The turbo I have for sale has an internal wastegate so that saves a lot of money and simplifies the install. |
hey guys i have a bit of bad news to share.
i learned today that my friend died in a head-on accident last night. apparently he was drivin' fast, maybe racing someone on the street and got in the accident. it was all over the news and now my mom doesn't want me to install a turbo system in the car because she thinks the police will be crackin' down on modified cars. so i'm in a bit of dilemma here. |
