Start-Up Normal RPM

Hi

Just joined this group, I just got a '02 P5 BLK, 5 speed with 7k miles on it, clean carfax title, this past weekend.

I just noticed something a little odd but may be normal as this is my first japenese car. When starting the car in the morning (summer this is) the RPM jump to about 2200 and kinda stays around 2000 for about a minute before dropping to normal 900 RPM during idle.

I checked made sure AC was not left on and fluids are topped off at acceptable ranges. Just wondering is this is normal or should I be alarmed at this, and if so, what are some courses of action...

thanks in advance
Armand

Yep. Your engine should idle around 700-900 once it's warm. In the winter especially this can take a long time. Take your car into the dealership and have then update the PCM to fix a rattle in the VVT.

The Proteges don't have VVT. The rattle comes from the VTCS. I don't think Mazda has "officially" released a fix for the US cars yet.

Elias, as far as your idle goes, that's completely normal and is nothing to worry about.

Those are acceptable numbers for cold start revs. Mine is anywhere between 1500 and 2000 on cold start but then drops down to normal as soon as I get going. Has been that way since new (somewhere around 26K now)

If you check the Protege FAQs , there is a fix in the way of a valve replacement and ECU reprogram.

I printed this out and took it to the dealer and low and behold my noise is gone.

Ahh...I guess they did release a fix. Here'a more direct link. http://web2.airmail.net/theman/prote...01-004-03.html
