small list of anoyances on my p5.. want opinions

I have been noticing little things on my p5 that i want to get your ideas and make sure nothing is wrong.

1. door lock noise:

when i press the lock/unlock button, the lock motors sound like they are dying or something? try it in your p5 and let me know.

2. Noise from shift colum in a Auto/Manual trans:

when i hit the brake to prepare to shift into reverse or drive, i hear a clicking noise from the shift column. I dont remeber it being there, can someone verify this noise for me on their p5?

I have both of these noises you are describing. The noise with the power locks seems to be coming from the hatch door. Can you confirm this, or is it coming from all over?

Mine's a stick, but the click from the steering column is probably the "brake lock." They started putting these on automatics in the 80s after all the problems with Audi. All it is is a little solenoid that won't let you shift out of Park unless your foot is on the brake. Just a safety thingy. My 93 Escort (Mazda tranny) made the same noise; it does seem to be louder than in some other cars.

what noise from the door locks?

markie_mark April-29th-2003 08:31 AM

the noise from the door locks isnt so much a noise, it is the sound of the lock motors when i press the lock/inlock button. It sounds like the motors loose juice halfway through the unlock/lock process.

your right, the "click" i hear when i press the brake is the shift lock. my main concern was that i never noticed it being that loud before.

thanks for the insights.

try to lock your drivers door w/ the power locks w/ your door open you'll see what i'm talking about

The doors will lock even if they're open. Do you have a factory security system on your car?

i am not 100% sure.... i have the standard Mazda "panic" lock/unlock remote.

i hope i was clear with my explanation, it isnt really a noise from the door locks, it is more of a loss of power sound comming from the door locks. It is weird. the locks work fine, i just didnt know if i should be concerned with this sound.

i am thinking of going to the dealer and sitting in a new p5 and see if it makes the same noies.

I know what your talking about and I have that noise as well. Probably normal

that is what i figured.... that is what i needed to know, if it was normal or not...

thanks for the help

My steering wheel makes a click sound when it is turned clockwise, then let go. It also makes this sound when im backing out of my driveway and the steering wheel straightens out. Mazda dealer told me all Proteges do this, is this true?

no door lock noise but the clicking in the steering column is actually the brake interlock for the transmission. it is very noticeable on these cars, i have never noticed it on any others.

My '02 P5 locks make that sound occasionally. My last two Intrepids did it too but still lasted four years each.

sometimes when i hit unlock from inside, i hear what sounds like an electronic "beep" from the locks. it only happens once in a while. I wish the lock button was located near the window switches, though, because i've these really long arms that make it like twister having to reach across with my right one to push it.

I have no noise coming from mine. The fit and finish of my interior is excellent and everything has worked flawlessly thus far.

I have the same problem in my sedan's left rear door. It kinda sounds like a dog yelping mixed with a slow dental drill. Gonna get it checked out before warranty expires in April.
