A simple but cool mod?

Last night was perusing www.corksport.com, and came upon this...

http://www.corksport.com/main.php3?p...3Fcat%3D220745

This should take you to the intake/exhaust section...

About halfway down the page they have an intake duct modification for under the front left fender.... anybody tried this yet?

Seems moderately priced perhaps, but thinking about bad things like water reaching intake filter etc... Any thoughts?

Also, want to buy an upgraded exhaust that flows better, but doesn't sound like a freakin chainsaw or tin can..... any suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

I think for everyday driving, the amount of crud that would collect on the deep fins of the filter would be more power robbing than the scoop would provide.

Maybe a fine mesh over it, water shouldn't be a concern. Plowing through a deep puddle might be.

Yeah well I am about to take out my SR and put in a CA instead, so this would be very handy considering. Thanks for your opinion, and I was checkin out your 5.. pretty sweet. Any idea on the exhaust? I'm used to dealing with the big H... not much into Pros.. I have tons of questions for performance, however, I've seen how brutal people can be to newbies who ask when they could research. :-D

That's funny, Roddimus and I were just talking yesterday about a way to open up that chamber to allow for cool air to enter. I've got a couple ideas, I'm just waiting for my CAI to get here. I think I'm going to try and find a way to measure the ambient temperature in that chamber while driving, and see if it really even needs any help.

if you look at the plastic that's on there now, you can see that it has a small bend towards the ground. i took a knife and cut-out a section of that...it did the same thing that the part from corksport does...and best of all, it's free!

Prote-J April-22nd-2004 01:52 PM

Well. I don't think it helps much with cold air, but still it does help air get to the filter itself, maybe even providing a pseudo ram air effect? LOL Not sure, but it looks like a great idea, and I've seen some of the things Corksport does with their Pro's, pretty good, and my friend has gone up against one of their cars before, and it was pretty quick.

SWEET Topher.. I hadn't looked.. but about to take my lunch.. so will check it when I get to it.. thanks for the thought.

While I think it's a neat idea, I don't think it's a good idea.

That opening (while allowing more air) is going to allow more water to get NEAR the filter....Notice I didn't say IN the filter or in the motor. Just NEAR it. The stock location for the CAI is water tight almost and retains no engine heat. I guess what I'm trying to say is "If it aint broke, don't ifx it!"

Prote-J April-22nd-2004 02:44 PM

Roger that.... It was merely a thought yanno? Like Myk had said, get a temp read out of there and see how it is, and how the airflow really is...

Topher April-22nd-2004 03:38 PM

eh, my msp lip keeps water out. it hangs down lower than the hole is...but i never had a problem in the year i've had it done!

Exhaust Suggestion

You might consider the Racing Beat cat back system. It provides a small but real power gain and is only slightly louder than stock.

You might want to check out my post in the 3rd Gen Engine section, I did some testing today of the temps. Its titled "Air intake temperature testing"... at least that's what I think I called it.... but it pretty well goes to show that the scoop is pretty much pointless.
