Shift Points On A P5

Sorry if this doesn't belong in this forum, but I can't really figure out where else to put it! ;) I'm planning on bracket-racing my P5 this spring (see specs below) but I'm wondering if anyone out there has any idea of the peak horsepower RPM on the FS-DE? I havent been able to find any dyno result postings with graphics anywhere, but if someone can tell me the torque dropoff and the horsepower dropoff, I'll know what RPM to shift at. No sense holding it to 7100 RPM if it drops off way back at 6K or something! Any help is appreciated!

I dont take my car past 6500-6600rpm. I find it really doesnt make much after that. (more of a stroker motor I think)

What you can do if find a spot to put your car in 3rd. and watch the speedo and tach as you accelerate, find the point where the speed really starts to drop off (tach will keep on climbing- more RPM's... not much speed) shift just before that point. I also short shift 1st. a bit.

Over all... just play with it a bit.

ya i usualy shift from 5500rpm to 6000rpm, anymore then that and car doesn't accelerate as fast......most of you know already that most of the power comes from the mid range 3500 - 6000rpm

If you are just looking for a dyno chart of the Protege5, I have mine posted on my site.

A link to the dyno will be near the bottom.

Thanks alot guys! That's exactly what I need! Don, what ever happened to that coffee you promised me? My treat! Drop me an email and we can set something up if you're not busy.

yup, after more inspection I'm not shifting much past 6000 either.
Not a whole lot past there.

As for the coffee Nick, sounds good but it will have to wait a few weeks.(swamped at work) By the way, is that a ZO6 on the lift?
PS. I work for Smart Home Systems if your ever on MacLeod Tr.

Don,

Sounds good. Just Email me or send me a PM once you've got a couple hours free. I've got a spare in the afternoons at school too, so I'm free anytime from 1:50pm everyday if that helps any. T

The car on the lift is a 2000 Corvette Convertible. (Check "My Poor Baby" thread for all you need.) The Z06 has different rims, red calipers, added rear brake cooling ducts, and is only available in the FRC (Fixed Roof Coupe, (Hardtop)) model.

Hope that clears it all up!

Ya I figured from the new pictures... my friend with the 2001 Yellow Corvette just redid the intake, heads, and exhaust last fall and smoked a Z06. (His last car was a SVT Cobra convertable with a Paxton blower) Now that car was scary!

Speaking of when to shift, I noticed that if I shift from 2nd to 3rd between 5000 and 5500 I get to 60mph quicker. But I'm still looking for a stock dyno test diagram to see when the hp starts to drop off. If anyone has seen one online, please post the link. TIA

the link about 6 posts up is a stock dyno.

Phreek5 March-7th-2002 04:45 AM

lol, I saw that after I posted it. But why does it only go to 100? I thought they had 130hp stock...

130 is stock flywheel HP. Dyno shows stock wheel HP, there's a loss from the drivetrain.
BTW, I saw somewhere a test or program someone did about the P5 or MP3, showed optimum shift points at 6000 - 6100. Don't remember when, where or how, though, just remember seeing it.
