Seat design/ergonomics in P5 and Protege
 

I was extremely bored this afternoon and decided to go out in my P5 and listen to some music. I leaned the seat back, popped on my hood (cold outside) and put my ams inside my sleeves (again, it's cold outside). The next thing I knew, it was an hour later...I had fallen asleep! I never noticed how comfortable the seats are, especially when reclined (and when you're toasty warm)...anyone else agree? Disagree?

I agree... fourteen hours straight in the car yesterday (just stops for gas and to pee) and I was not "worn out" like I used to be when I made the same drive in my Chevy. The seats get a "thumbs up" from me.

I want to get a pair of ES/Pro5 seats. The ones in my LX never seem to be adjustable to the position I want. The backrest is too firm at the bottom, so I have to recline it more than I'd like for a comfortable ride.

Yup, I agree that the Pro5/ES seats are very comfortable. The backrest especially, since it provides more than enough boostering, hugging your back threw the twisties while not putting pressure on it.

The seat cushion however, lacks the firmness of the backrest and does not provide enough boostering for an all out thrash, and its not long enough so sometime my legs feel numb after long drives.

I very much agree.....my wife and I have done some cross country driving in her P-5....and when we drive cross country....we usually drive at LEAST 12 hours...and sometimes as many as 15 in a day....and I was never fatugied at all....not a single time....nor did I ever feel like I needed to stop and streach.....the seats are great.

definately... just wish they had the side bolsters and support that my se-r seats have (they rawk! i recommend a set!)... but stock, these things are comfy! props to mazda designers for atleast making it a comfortable seat

once i put racing seats in the se-r though, im gonna recover the stock se-r seats and put them in my p5!

I disagree. I've taken mine down from Mass to Va and back and my back gets worn down quick. Needs at least a little lumbar support, and more side bolstering. I think I am going to steal the seats from my old conquest to stick in there. Talk about some awesome seats!!! New guy here. I'll intro myself in a bit.

WOW! I thought I was the only one who had done this. I have also feel asleep in my car listening to music. I was sooo bored that day, except mine sleep time was during summer.

The seats are EXTREMELY comfortable! I use to have back pain after driving my old car home every day from work (30 min drive). With the P5, I can drive for hours.

poktrokt, are the seats that uncomfortable to you?

I agree with you partially... the seats could use a little more lumbar support (perhaps those adjustable lumbar supports that have the turn knob on the side of the seat to make it softer or firmer). But they are still way more comfortable than most other cars I have driven.

the seats are comfy,while the side supports suck...I think I'm gonna get some racing style seats....I saw some synthetic leather ones in this months Super Street for like $179 a piece!! I think I might get those...I hate having to hold on to the steering wheel for dear life when i whip the car around a little!!!

is there a difference between the leather seats and non-leather seats in terms of shape and back support?

My P5 has the leather, and unless i have it positioned just right it kills my back after 15 minutes. and even when it is just right, it will give me a sore back after 3 or 4 hours.

Can anyone recommend some aftermarket NON-RACING seats with adjustable back that will fit in the P5 and are comfortable?


And hopefully not too expensive (i'm still not sure if i'm gonna keep the car for as long as i can or upgrade to an Audi A4 or Subaru Legacy as soon as i can afford to) as i don't want to put too much into the car just yet.

A little tip for additional lumbar support. I have used a blood pressure cuff. Just open the seat, zipper or clips, and slide the cuff into position. Place the bulb next to the seat belt clip and pump away. Infinitely adjustable. Best of luck.

Whatever you do, do NOT get cheap racing seats. They will not last for very long. A friend of mine got a Tenzo-R Rally-type racing seat ($250 + $50 bracket + $40 install) and after a couple months of normal driving that thing started squeaking really bad. Then after a couple more months the little plastic surrounds on the holes for the seatbelt fell off and wouldn't go back on, and then it stuck in one position and could never be moved again. Thankfully he sold the car for some profit.
