$16,900?!

Was the $16,900 after all tax and documents? If so, that's a hot deal.

S-plan is a plan for corporate relationship members which enables member to purchase vehicles for a fixed price. This is usually around invoice. Certain companies have this relationship with Ford in which their employees can purchase cars at a discount. Ford has its version which is the X-plan.

I've heard of X-plan. My mom works for Budget (used to be Ryder) corporate, and has the x-plan with Ford. We went in to a Ford dealership about a month and a half ago looking at an Escape for her. I'm not too sure if maybe it was just the salesmen or the dealership we were at... but with the x-plan she was going to pay pretty much the same as sticker (something around $22k brand new) and was going to have some sort of outrageous payment around $400. Make sure you call your benefits people about your S-plan and get the full details before you go to buy a car using it. Because the dealer we went to, wasn't willing to help us at all. Usually a dealer will try to work with you after you tell them a $400 payment is to high. The guy we saw said "bye."

Thr problem is that the dealer doesn't make squat on an X or S plan so that might explain the cold shoulder. Why should he sell a fairly hot item to you when he could make more money selling it to someone else.

Called a dealer today and he said the S-plan price for a P5 listing at $17,995 (Auto and nothing else) was around $16,300. I just might bite at that price.:blue:

i purchased my pro es at s-plan pricing. sticker was $16,500 (if i remember correctly) and i paid $15,005 +tax, title, etc. it works out to about 3-4% below invoice pricing, and 3-4% higher than an employee of mazda would pay.

The dealer still makes holdback even if they sell at the "s" plan price. The s-plan price is about 2-300 below the true invoice price. You can also get s-plan price in conjunction with all current offers and incentives. The holdback for Mazda cars is about 2 or 3% of the MSRP which would be about $4-500. So the dealer still makes out okay. Not as much as the dude that pays 500 or more over invoice, but they still make money. They also make more if they charge advertising fee's, sell you undercoating, service contracts etc...

If they give you the cold shoulder over the s plan price, then go somewhere ells. I went to a local dealer that is notorious for being stingy and hard to deal with. I got s-plan price, 0% financing and top dollar for my trade. But I was ready to walk.

They don't have to honor the s-plan pricing, but most dealers will. Just keep trying till you can make a deal.

Mazda S plan is exactly like Ford X plan. The price you pay is 4% above the A plan price which is 5% below invoice price.

So to figure out the S plan price, add up all the invoice cost of options of your car = $INV

$INV x 0.95 = $A

$A x 1.04 = $S

In practice, a close approximation of S or X plan price is 1% below invoice but it is actually a little bit lower than that.

In addition, all rebates and incentive financing rates still apply so you can still get that $7000 rebate for the Millennia S or buy your P5 with 0% interest even if you use the S plan.

And the dealer makes lots of money on S plan sales because they get to keep all the holdbacks and on most cars, dealers get a S/X plan allowance from Mazda/Ford which makes up for part of the difference between invoice price and S/X plan price.

Umm, I don't know how you yanks have the plans set up, but I work for a steel maker that sells to ford, so I qualified for the x-plan.

My advice is sign up for your x or s or what ever plan. Take your pin number into the dealership. They are now required to show you the dealer invoiced price if you ask for it.

I did and they have a book with the prices in it.
A plan = dealer invoice
X-plan = dealer invoice + 4%
s-plan = dealer invoice + 8%

Also you can't use the grad and x plan together. But even if you don't want to use the s-plan, do it at another dealership, find out what the invoice price is and use that to negotiate the price. I got mine for 20K canadian with abs and moon and A/C. 25 with taxes and stuff. That is around 16.5 american. You would be surprised just how much dealer invoice price is. They (dealers) don't make much money on these entry level cars.

The crappy part is that they are in demand so you have little to no purchasing power with these guys.

How does one qualify for the s-plan. What membership would I need to qualify? Are there any?

To qualify your company has to supply a good or service to the auto maker. You can ask your human resource dept if they do, or public relations. If your company qualifies you will be given a phone number to call, you call give your name address etc. and they give you a 4 digit pin number. Then you go to the dealership tell them you are on the s-plan give the pin and tell them you want to see the pricing guide. They have to show it to you. If the don't they are not playing by the rules. By joining the s-plan you are legally bound not to give out the dealer invoice price to anyone. you can say what you paid, what the s-plan rule is, just not what the dealer invoice price is.

the formular I quoted is for US and Canadian X and S plan. They are the same.

I have purchased many Fords with X plan. You pay exactly 4% above A plan price which is 5% below dealer invoice price. You can look it up in the Ford Direct website.

A plan is the employee price. It cannot be transferred to "friends and family".

You can obtain an X plan from any employees of Ford and Ford Credit. They can give away 2 X plans for calender year to "friends and family". You can also join EAA for $50 a year and get a X plan PIN. Also if you are employees of certain companies that sell or provide services to Ford, you *may*get X plan as well but they are not transferrable. Only Ford employee X plan is transferrable. X plan is available to all Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover vehicles except 2002 T-Bird.

S plans are harder to come by because there are fewer Mazda employees. But it works exactly the same way as Ford X plan. Because Ford doesn't directly own Mazda USA Sales Corporation, the S plan cannot be exchanged for X plan and vice versa.
