Running lean, engine management for protege

Anyone know of a good piggy back or other fuel management system that will allow me to adjust mixtures of my protege 2001 ES...

I have a gain of about 7% hp that i want to off set to maximize fuel economy for a upcoming test i want to conduct.

I hear the ECU is a persistant bitch at overriding any piggy back systems at full throttle...

anyone?

Piggy backs don't work...standalone is the way to go..Haltech

Mac, will i have the ability to have incrimental adjustments to the mixture with the Haltech, ? to do as i previously mentioned?

macdaddyslomo February-21st-2005 12:13 PM

as far as I know you can for every 500 rpms....

haltech F10X, best fuel only computer you can get for the pro's.

It has a 500rpm resolution which is plenty good enough for us since it also does linear blending.

You're running lean?? really? I've never heard of ANY 3rd gen pro running lean...always VERY rich.

its just a experiment, in terms of fuel economy. looking to increase the range of my protege by 100 km

if i can lean up the fuel that should restore everything to equal stock HP but increased fuel economy.

by tuning it for maximum power you'll have more power available and require less fuel to get you to the same speed.

Depending on how everything goes for me and the WOMP in the next ffew months I may do an all motor Haltech E6X on a 2.0L DX and tune it for max power....get B&A dyno's....I just don't know many NA modders who want to spend $1400 for EMS and about 20-25whp.

Dang, 1400 would be to much for me! But thats what I'm been looking for.

its a strange theory but we have my friends modded similar to mine, he has a header on there as well as a Injen Intake, and he is doing exactly as you say...

but i have a another friend who are going to challenge him to a bingo FUEL Run to Winsor and back. and test the theory, if i am right. i will get further then him in a constant speed flat out run.

His car,
Mazda Pro 2002
130,000km
Borla exhaust
OBX header
Injen Intake
and MP3 ECU

My rig is pretty much the same
Pro 2001
128,000
Borla Exhaust
K&N Filter
and a Wag Header on the way

if i can balance my WHP gain with leaning back on fuel in the mix. it sounds kinda strange but girlfriend Mel thinks that compensating for the effiency gain of the exhaust and intake flow will allow me to get away with running slightly lean, or leaner then normal.

Loser has to pay for the winners refuel, braggin rights, and the buys the winner Dinner.

check the prices out, yikes lol Haltech is top buck, but i guess as you guys say, its the best...

what do you guys know about the Apexi Fuel Computer
S-AFC II (NEW Version 2)

Roddimus Prime February-21st-2005 09:19 PM

Apexi's are piggybacks...they wont work. The problem with those style fuel controllers is they only alter the signal from the stock computer. Standalones like the haltech I'm running litterally take all control of the fuel system away from the stock ECU.

the stock ecu will always,...ALWAYS turn back to base maps when in open loop mode. Only way to get around is to bypass the injectors totally and control them with something else.

damn, lol i better save up lol, i thought the piggy back problem was with full throttle, i didnt know it was that overkill, god damn mazda

Roddimus Prime February-21st-2005 09:48 PM

yeah at WOT it locks out all other input...you may notice some better around town mileage by leaning it way out but it'll be very difficult to tune it safely and at WOT you'll be stock again.
