resonating noise at 40km/h in 1st

my mom owns a 99 pro 1.6 and it makes a strange resonating sound at 40km/h when you csuise in 1st gear. it doesn't have a tach so i dunno what rpm its at. it sounds like something internal in the engine, like a valve or a piston vibrating. strange thing is, it goes away when you floor the gas. you can only hear it when you hold it at that rpm. has anyone had the same problem? should i even be worried? oh, and one more question. the car is under warranty, but i do all the maintanance, like oil changes and brakes and such. will mazda not fix my car, because i do not have the maintanance book stamped by a mechanic?

take it in to the dealer, and have them look at it. i agree with edwin about the cruising in first at 40km/h, why? as for warranty, as long as you keep your receipts for oil, oil filters, and air filters and all that, and you log it in the book.. it shouldn't be a problem. that's what the dealership told me if i wanted to do all my own maintenance of that kind.

simple fix....

SHIFT

you are probably pushing redline, 1st gear isnt exactly a cruising gear id say, especially at 40 km or whatever......

Makaveli June-23rd-2002 07:13 PM

I'm assuming that you drive an automatic...... or that you drive a 5 speed, and mean cruising at 4000 rpms.......

as someone up there said, 'SHIFT UP'

oregano June-23rd-2002 10:34 PM

i didnt really mean "cruising" in first. i've simply noticed the sound before and found out it only happens when you keep it at 40 km/h in first, or 80 in second. it wont happen when you accelerate through that point quickly. im definately gonna have mazda look at it.

Ambient June-23rd-2002 10:45 PM

WTF, 80 in second?

Like everyone else said, SHIFT. Your car is straining at that speed in such a low gear. Take it to Mazda so they can laugh and tell you the same thing.

i saw that too... i was like wtf... i forget, what's km/h = in mph. i've got a 1.6 too, and my shit doesnt make weird noises, other than being really loud. :P

Makaveli June-24th-2002 03:19 AM

80 km/h is like 50 mph.......

dude, that's way too high......

here's the question, do you have a tachometer in your car? The one that tells you how many rpms you're driving at? If you do, then you shouldn't really be maintaining anything close to the redline for a long time.

SHIFT UP!!!!

:the finge GODDAMNIT!

I dont have a tach and yes i do know im straining the engine. im not goin past redline so why is my engine falling apart? doesn't it get strained when im ripping it full gas up to 100 km/h in second? oh sorry, i forgot, you only understand miles. i meant 62 miles per hour(redline for second gear). Point is, why duz it only happen when i go past that point slowly at partial throttle?

Because you're not supposed to. LOL, man how many more ways can we say it. Go buy a tach so you can see it for yourself.

One quick question - How do you know you are not going past redline if you don't have a tach telling you what RPM's you are running at? I am not trying to be an ass, I am just wondering.

apparently our good friend oregano here likes to rev his engine to get that TOP-END POWER from every gear. Let him keep revving it up going 80kph(50mph) in SECOND gear, waste fuel, and have a nice and unnecessarily noisy ride :D

I mean, doesn't loud = fast??? so he must be mad fast y0 cruising in 2nd gear at 50mph :D

my $.02 cdn

:D

man people are getting testy in here

(huh huh, i said testy, huh huh)

Hmmm... wierd noises coming from an engine spinning right around 6,000rpm? Do you realize your pistons are being slammed up and down at the rate of 60 feet per second? Multiply that by 4 pistons and add a crankshaft, flywheel, alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, water pump, and oil pump that are spinning so fast you can grind metal with them, and I have no idea why there's any strange noises.

Is it hurting the engine to drive like this. No, probably not. Will you hear strange sounds? Yes, you probably will. I'm sure Mazda engineers didn't spend very much time fine-tuning the resonance sound of the engine held at part-throttle at 6,000rpm. I'm sure they figured the 1.6L would not be driven like this or even close to this. They designed that engine for fuel economy.

Please shift sooner unless your under full throttle... the sounds of the 1.6L at those RPMs is rather unbearable.

most cars are designed to top out at 100km/h(62mph), in second gear. this is done so that the car can reach that speed without having to shift to third gear. this gives it a quicker 0-60 time, which is what manufactureres use to tell the performance of their vehicles.
