i was wondering about this feature sold on mazdastuff:

i was wondering a few things:

in australia i dont think the majority of our Astina SP20's have outside temperature thingos (correct me if im wrong) meaning does the temperature work

and if this does work even without an "in dash" temperature thingo will it show in centigrade? cause once again we dont use the same as the US

id love to know as i might think about getting it if anyone says they work and arent an annoyance...

I have the mirror in my P5, and it can display in both C and F, so, that shouldn't be a problem for you. I don't believe it can display temperatures below freezing, and the highest I have seen is 113. My major complaint (I believe it wasn't properly wired by the dealership) is that the compass loses calibration everytime the car is powered off. Besides that, I'm glad I have it.

I have this mirror, it was included in my P5.
I love it, it does read under freezing, the lowest I';ve seen is 0. Unknown how high yet, I just bought the car in Dec.
On a side not, I would like to know if I can recalibrate it and WHERE THE FREAKING TEMP SENSOR>
I dont think its in the correct spot.
Overall, I think its worth the money, I could careless for the compass, I only wanted the temp.

I installed one of these and so far I am very please. I like the temp readout and the auto-dimming feature. The compass is nice, but I have a GPS in the car as well so it is redundant.

Re: some of the questions:

Yes, the kit ships with the temp sensor and necessary wiring for the install, you have to bring one wire in from the engine compartment

Temp can be in either Celcius or Farenheit, selectable with a button on the mirror

On the directions for the one I got they had me install it in the nose of the car. It is in the space behind the front bumber and infront of the left front wheel well. It sticks down slightly below the car so you should be able to spot it.

You can recalibrate the compass, but not the termocouple (you should not need to). One thing to keep in mind is that these are only really accurate when the car is in motion, if you stand still for a while it picks up heat from the engine or off the pavement (hot parking lot for example)

It sure does sound like it, mine does not loose its "brains". The kit came with an in-line fuse for it and the location for where to tap the power.

When installed, where do the power and sensor cables run? Do you have to remove your headliner to wire it?

the run down the driver's side A-pillar. You can pull the front lip of the headliner down just a tad and tuck them in without any problem... no need to remove it.

Not a great pic, but in it you can see the two wires (actually three as I have my radar detector power routed the same way) in the little cable bundle (they supply the little wrapper) going down to the mirror.

the kit comes with a full instruction set that is pretty good... I had some difficulty getting the original one off the mount, but once that was over it was a very easy install...

i thought about getting one of those, but then i figured if i really wanted to know how hot/cold it was i'd just roll the window down. :D besides, i would've wasted my money since i wouldn't be using the "cold" measurements too often... :p

ok just to make sure i hopped in my car today and th mirror is mounted on the windscreen... maybe this is different in the states.... the automatic one is mounted on the roff so what is the deal..? will is still work, or will i have a huge mark on my windscreen once the mirror is removed to put the new one in?

no, the automatic is mounted on the same mount as the original one (on the glass), what you see coming down is the wire bundle for the power lead and the temp sensor lead. If I get a chance I will try to take a better pic today.
