racing beat exhaust changed tip for p5?
 

i've been doing my research on cat back exhaust systems and have pretty much made up my mind to get the racing beat. but i came across some pictures that are a little different from one another. there was someone on here, can't remember who, who put a new RB catback on his wife's white P5. the exhaust tip looks like it is double layered. the one i saw on rishie's car is single layered. the new one is also more oval whereas the old one is more circular. both seem to be cut at a slight angle. is there a difference to the exhaust beyond this? why did RB change the tip? i think the "old" style looks better because it is a solid tip. the new one looks like an enlarged stock exhaust with a non-stainless steel inner and a chrome tip over it. any help is appreciated.

i won't be ready to buy until the summer anyway, so there's no rush on anything. thanks in advance!

Are you sure you're not comapring the exhaust that was designed for the MP3 (round tip) with the one designed for the Mazdaspeed (oval tip)? Both are made by Racing Beat, and no, the new Mazdaspeed exahaust will not fit a P5.

notice how there's an inner layer on the new ones. in the "old" tip post, the first picture looks circular, but the second picture looks oval. i'm not sure what caused this, but from what i have seen on other people's cars, it's more circular in design.

You're right. I've never noticed that before. I'm not really sure what to tell you as to why RB changed this. My guess would be that they found a cheaper/easier/better way to produce the exhausts, or something along those lines. I highly doubt there's any real difference between the new or old style other than looks.

Damn I like the older tip as well, though I do like the new one but it does look like a oversized stock unit. I will probably still buy the new one just because of the great sound...

did you notice that the one tip didn't have the Racing Beat logo on it?

you're right... so i'm not going crazy, right? there IS a difference between the old and the new. i am thinking of calling racing beat and just ask them what the differences are, if any, in terms of performance and sound. i just think the old style looked so much sexier. like i said, the new style just looks like a bloated stock exhaust. does anyone in the aftermarket make an exhaust with a double layer tip like that?

Borla kind of does, at least they used to. they had "resonator" tips that looked similar to the Racing Beat only the space between the outer and inner lips (haha) was larger +had thin vertical slats that connected the two. I will try to find a pic....

after some more searching, i found that the "old" design was a first run sort of thing and they had the racing beat logo on the left of the tip. this would explain why we couldn't see the logo at all in those closeups of the exhaust. the more i look at the new one, though, the more i like it. it's oval, so it's a little different than the exhaust systems out there now. just as long as the dyno numbers are the same and the sound is the same, i don't really care. i just really like how it sits perfectly in the cutout.

oh wait! maybe that's the answer! to make it fit that much better in the cutout, they had to double layer it so heat coming out of the exhaust tip won't melt the cutout section. i think this is what happened with a few of the team moon exhausts out there as the exhaust tip was way too close to the cutout and started melting away paint and plastic. waiting for racing beat's reply on the new exhaust as we speak...

I beg to differ my friend. Mazda Speed makes a muffler for the P5 and the sedan. I pulled this right out of the FAQ up above on the right.
MazdaSpeed USA sport muffler (manufactured by Bosal):
for Protege: part # 0000-8M-C09
for Protege 5: part # 0000-8M-C10
You can take this part number to your dealers parts dept and get one for about 200 dollars. I also have proof that they fit. I have one, and it installed and works just fine. You have to get longer muffler hangers from the auto parts store so it does not ride the bumper like in the picture. I now have a 1/4 inch gap around the tip. I have enjoyed the muffler since the day I installed it. Its not to loud, but when you put youre foot in the gas you know its there.
You should also know this is just an Axle back.

I have the "old" tip Racing Beat exhaust on my p5 and Yes it's from the first batch of exhausts and the logo is on the wrong side... hehehe...
I like the "old" tip style better though, not because I own it, but I think it looks better. It's just too bad the logo is on the wrong side....

Either way, it's a nice exhaust; quality and performance wise.

DING-DING-DING. You got it. The design of the tip on my car was designed to help keep the heat away from the bumper. My wife has a 25min. drive in which she averages a speed of about 60mph. I have felt the bumper around the tip and it's not one bit hot. It's luke warm, if even that.

irish6714, i am pretty sure kakarot was talking about the exhaust that's on the car called "mazdaspeed" and not the exhaust from mazdaspeed. if i remember correctly, the mp3 exhaust was manufactured by mazdaspeed, while the mazdaspeed protege has a racing beat exhaust. but i'm not sure. whatever.

just can't wait to come up with the funds to get this bad boy.
