Protege ES 2002 Gearbox

How come did the engineers build a gearbox that runs at 3.8 RPM @ 100 km/h in 5th speed on a 2002 Mazda ES 2.0 ?? Is that normal because with the actual price of the gaz, it ain't cheap...

Wwhile it does make the engine spin faster, it does make it more responsive. (even in 5th gear) Iit is normal for the protege, and will not cause anything to wear faster. However, even with the short 5th gear, I can average 32mpg per tank. YMMV.

They did it so the customer would minimize down shifts.
