Protege ECU = FORD

I almost had a heart attack, is it true the proteges ECU is a Ford Monster?

THAPRO1 January-8th-2006 12:32 PM

yes

zerocover January-8th-2006 12:42 PM

NO
If it was we would have hacked the shit out of it and had proper tunning by now. It is similar but its all mazda coding.

The auto tranny however is almost exactly the same as the ford counter part.

macdaddyslomo January-8th-2006 01:41 PM

Why does everyone act like if there is a ford part on their car it is some kind of travesty ???

Zero is right...if it was a ford ecu it would probably be a lot easier to tune

Buck January-8th-2006 01:45 PM

Mazda pretty much = Ford

Roddimus Prime January-8th-2006 01:48 PM

welcome to 5 years ago.

It IS a ford Ecu with mazda programming. Mazda can't afford to take losses on warranty claims so they lock out their ecu's from modders. Ford thrives on people making aftermarket parts for their cars so they almost promote hacking of their code.

p.s. I'm giving my ecu to "bama chips" who does a lot of SCT tuning for the Focus and Mustang and Ranger crowd. He seems to think he can crack it.....but I'll wait to see it to be impressed.

Buck January-8th-2006 01:55 PM

So in that case would it possibly be worth it to swap a probe ecu into the protege for easier modding? Or is that not an option?

not an option..probe ecu wont work...BIG difference in ignition systems, plus VTCS

Roddimus Prime January-8th-2006 02:19 PM

since the ecu IS flashable I think there is promise for a new tuneable solution but it won't be cheap or easy.

This guy will probably sell a re-flash tool in the $300 range....kinda high for most protege owners.

God I hope so. We need cheap tuning alternatives. Most of the time the Ford crowd doesn't need a stand-alone. That is how good the Ford EEC-IV and EEC-V computers are (the Black Oak is impressive too, but has a very complicated code).

Roddy, keep me informed please!

It would be worth it. Hell custom EEC-V chips are selling in the $275-$325 range, but are well worth it and easy to install. Many are flip chips like that in my Lightning.

Just think, a bigger MAF to handle all that turbo airflow...

Roddimus Prime January-9th-2006 11:44 AM

or, no MAF, no rev limit, no fuel cut, etc./

Doug at bama chips does a lot of good stuff. He is doing the chip for a turbo ranger I'm building for another guy. He also does some of the newer SHO stuff. His 4wd supercharged ranger runs 12's in the quarter on pump gas and it's just a 4.0L V6 w/ vortech. It's odd seeing a 6" lift on a ranger and then have it blister all 4 tires off the line.

I'd love to be s/c'd running off a MAP sensor....my MAF is a huge choke on flow...but that damn MAF/IAT combined is so damn sensitive you can't even mount it in a bigger pipe

With the EEC-V you could use the 80 or 90mm Lightning MAFs. The reason I say use the MAF is that for the power levels we could produce, they would never be maxed out, and drivability would be retained. They also retain much more self-tuning capability (narrow-band O2s just don't cut it). You can program to use them as draw-through or blow-through with a turbo/SC combo.
