Protege' drag car

In the February issue of Super Street there is a small article about a Protege' drag car coming out for 2002 season. It is developed by Ziel Motorsports and JIC Magic. Estimated power is about 550hp.

Hopefully entries like this and the Protege's in the speedvision world challenge will stir up some more development for performance parts.

Here is a link to some pics of it as well.

Yeah what tranny are they using with that power there is no way the stock G25M-R could keep up (correct me please if I'm wrong on the tranny numbers) I have seen that though I wouldn't have put the MP3 front end on it though just basically a huge air dam.:dunno:

aftermarket

It's unfortunate that there are not that many aftermarket products for the protege,it's a shame. But I know there is a big potential for power, the car is already surprising with the 1,8L engine. But I don't really worry,I'm sure we will be able to get some power parts in a few months.I've seen some lightweight flywheels, piston sets, and so on.I guess some better stuff will come.If there is a drag version, for sure it will arise some curiosity. The same thing happened with the neon.I had one for 4 years,we just broke up.And within one single year,I've seen some big turbo kits pushing the car to incredible power (220-275hp)without any mods to the crank, rods,or anything.(just think of the han racecraft neon,it ran 600+hp,street legal!!!)The same will happen for the protege for sure, its just a question of time.;)

smoked headlights

oh baby, I love those SMOKED Headlights.....

I think GTS manufactures that smoked headlight cover... just wondering, are those legal, illegal? I hear a bird say you can only have them on in the daytime??

Smoked headlights

I used to have some of these on my ex-car.I kept them on even at night,I never got bugged or anything, but I'm sure It was illegal. You normally have to remove them at night...:crying:

This is getting a little off the subject, but I agree it's only a matter of time before the pro starts getting major aftermarket suppport. I mean think about it, what kind of sport compacts are left? The new civics are BALLS ugly, even honda owners don't like them...

The pro5 is getting a lot of attention from people. I don't see how you can't love those cars, they're HOT! Plus the regular pros are good looking. I finally saw a brand new ES in person the other day, and I was really impressed... Lot's of potential. Let's hope for the best, guys!

Nice car but it's not a drag car.

looks like a drag car to me.

Transmission? Did they convert it to rear wheel drive? I couldn't resist Jesse. Actually, the transaxle used in the '99-'00 1.8L Protégés is the F25M-R and the transaxle used with all 2.0L Protégés is the G15M-R. The G series is generally considered the stronger transaxle, although neither of them would probably handle that kind of power without extensive modification. Another question I have is what engine are they using? Is that based on the FP/FS 3rd gen block. That would be good news about the engines potential.

more info

Sorry no information about the transmission used in the car. The car is using JIC's drag suspension. For some of the engine mods they are using a Serrano Racing intake manifold, DTA engine management system (which they sell on their web page). www.zielmotorsports.com

I emailed Ziel to get some more info about the car, hopefully they will get back to me.

that thing is totally setup to drag race.

 My bad. I should have look at the pic closer. At first glance it looks like a road race set-up. A closer look reveals drag racing slicks in the front ( I guess that answers the rwd/fwd question)
