Project for fast Protege 5

hi. I'm a bit new so bear with me. I'm an Aussie protege owner. I have a Mazda SP20 (Protege 5). It's got 4200kms on the clock and the best time i've pulled on 1/4 mile is 16.58. I would really appreciate it if someone could advise me on easy and fairly cheap mods to get this car to 15.5 at least.

Thanks guys!

Sir Nuke February-25th-2002 10:44 PM

you are talking about shaving a second off your time....that is quite a bit. here in the US there is a sign you will find in some speed shops....and it reads "SPEED COST MONEY, HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO". if you want to build a car that is fast....and one that is also your transprotation, thus needing to be reliable. its not going to be CHEAP, not to do it the RIGHT way. Cheap, Fast, and Reliable do NOT go hand in hand. if you go cheap...you may go fast, for a while anyway...but you will sacrifice reliablility.....but your power plant will die an untimely death and most likely...when its the WORST possible moment.

korr_wins February-25th-2002 10:51 PM

hi nuke. :bt:

as far as i know i can get it down to 15.00 as safe as can be. (my exaust and extractors are gonna add an easy 15 kw at the wheels which sould get me to flat 16s. there are other mods but they are custom and i wanted to shop around first and see if there are better deals. thats why i was hoping you would know some sites that have parts?

korr_wins February-25th-2002 11:15 PM

Ha... That's another thing i was thinking about. What is really not needed in the car? as far as im concerned i only need the back seat. I'm gonna take out the spare cause once i get my 18s there wont be a spare..... maybe ill get one of those cheap racing spares like the ones in the 200sx. Fill me in guys.....whats needed?

Makaveli February-26th-2002 01:19 AM

If you're going for speed, dont go for 18s, but rather 16s or 17s... and make 'em really light.....

tresdos3 February-26th-2002 03:04 AM

yep..makaveli is right...it would be more advantageous to run with lightweight 16's..some volk's would be nice but they are bloody expensive...maybe some lensos..1100$$aus for a set of 16....btw are u in sydney??

there is a chip available for the sp20's...from an aussie company..thanks njaremka for this link;)

powerchips

also bosal/brospeed make a bolt-on exhaust for the sp20's as seen in the sr2 laser built by "hot-4's magazine"..im not sure if that was a one only or if they have actually started to import that system from the states...also check corksport.com for cams and chip package as well as headers/extractors :)

:bt: good luck

korr_wins February-26th-2002 03:46 AM

Thanks guys!

I've done some weighing and i thing i can cut down on some excess luggage, That should help me out a bit.
As for the chip. I've already talked to the guy and I'm thinking either as soon as my car is over 10000kms i'll get it, or I'll just go for a j-spec ECU and upgrade my injectors and fuel pump.
The muffler like I said I'm getting a custom one by Hitech Mufflers. 15kw at the wheels is nothing to sneeze at.:D
Now the hardest part is the cams. I've e-mailed corksport before but they have never replied to me. Try a month of waiting. So I dont know. I'd like to have Mazdaspeed parts you know. But if i cant get them i'm not gonna cry about it. I'll just have to go even more SIK on my car.
:the finge

Keep me in on the info guys!
Thanks!

If you still have the e-mail, send it to me. I can talk to them for you. I call them almost daily now that I am getting the FS-ZE, and have been delayed. They never answered my e-mails either!

geez, i just start reading this thread and i didn't know i was involved already! :p

LinuxRacr February-26th-2002 07:47 AM

Kool!! This is the company that Corksport is talking to. I hope to hear something by the end of the week.

Sir Nuke February-26th-2002 08:26 AM

hope you don't take offense PseudoRealityX, BUT....I personally believe its a bit irresponsible to just start telling ANYONE to start ripping into their car without a little more information. WE didn't know from the initial post if Korr is/was planning to turn his car into a full on drag car, or how much experience he has...or if he needs to keep it really reliable for daily driving for MANY years to come.....so without a little more information I wasn't about to tell someone with a low mileage car to start ripping into the engine.....HOWEVER....Korr_win sent me a PM and ask for some information.....THERE he was given a systematic approach to achieve his goal. I believe I was HELP.....trying to keep what I saw as someone just getting into the sport from getting in over their head and then being unhappy with the results.:D

All of those things that Jesse mentioned are not going to affect the reliability of the car, at least not very much. The cams that would be the only thing that could possibly make the car less reliable. Also, if his goal is 15.5, I HIGHLY doubt that he's going to "turn his car into a full on drag car". And again, it wouldn't really matter what experience he has save the cams and headers. Exhaust and intake are simple boltons that can be done by just about anyone.

Sir Nuke February-26th-2002 08:50 AM

Yep I agree......and I hope jesse doesn't think I was BLASTING him......I didn't have that intent. I have been racing for a long time....and have seen beginners get a little "head over heals" in doing things to their cars....and end up in over their heads without realizing what they were really doing, that in not only bad for them...but bad for the sport as a whole.....its why I take a bit slower approach in giving advice to beginners until I know their true intent....their budget....and if they are talking about their OWN car...or their moms grocery getter....

Korr has since wrote me and told me he has no intention on going into the engine at this point....the car is too new. He is really looking at bolt on stuff....and other ways to decrease his time, such as the lightening of critical pieces and removal of none essential parts that can easily be reinstalled.

korr_wins February-26th-2002 08:53 AM

hey people.

You know what. I'm actualy glad i came hear. Since last year Nov, every e-mail every phone call i made ended up in "Sorry. we're not familiar with the car" or even better "Sorry mate. Never heard of it.) Buch of fagots. It's a brilliant car and i dont care how much people say its not worth the money it's a gold mine. I'm telling you it has so much potential but as soon as our car companies get a hold of it and compliance it, theres not much left eg. the original j-spec redlines at 7500 (and lets get one thing straight they have a FF and 4WD with the same specs), It has 125kw @ 6800 and i cant remember the torque but it was enough trust me...... Anyway enough bitching.. I'm glad I came here because there are people who actually care about this car, people like me.. This car is by no means a 200sx. no way. but for what it is its definetly not going as fast as it should be. And lets be reasonable guys. It can and has already done in Australia 15s.

I'm proud to be a protegean.... a Sports Wagon Protegean!

tresdos3 February-26th-2002 09:15 AM

if you really want the cams..i suggest you try to get in contact with mazdaspeed...TheMan mentioned that they have just released a new catalogue out...im pretty sure i can get you the part number..but im waiting on a reply from frosty666 who also lives in sydney..as he has the original catalogue (b4 the new one) and it lists the cams/chip packages available from mazdaspeed...he has already fitted this set to his 1.6..it cost him 1600$aus to bring them over plus about 100$aus shippin to his door..and they took three weeks...these cams and chip were later fitted and dialed in by penrith mazda...on what track did you run a 16.5?....

also on the subject of using jspec engine management....are you sure even our premium 98 ron can handle it??...because in japan they have fuel which goes up to 105ron
