Performance Upgrades for the Protege 5

I'm new to the world of mazda performance but I'm guessing it's similar to most imports when it comes to bolt-on modifications.

For performance, my guess is intake, headers, exhaust, pulleys, throttle body, thermostat, fan switch, rad cap, etc.... Anything else?

What about suspension, other than installing coilovers, do the addition of strut bars and larger sway bars make any differences in the handling?

What is a good manufacturer for the above mentioned bolt-on mod's for a 2002 mazda protege 5?

You will be much more pleased if you take the suspension upgrade route over the engine upgrade path. It's very difficult to see significant gains with the FS-DE motor. The suspension responds quite well to changes though and it can handle like a machine if you set it up properly.

for inexpensive engine performance I'd recomend a ZEX dry nitrous kit. A 50hp shot on an otherwise stock car will really wake you up. I used this kit in everything from an eclipse, to a taurus to a cobra. Works like a charm and won't cost an arm and a leg.

if you're interested I have a used kit for sale.

Radiator cap? How much is that gonna help out performance? A turbo is my favorite bolt on right now, though that may be changing to a supercharger soon enough.

[sarcasm]I dunno man, my Mazdaspeed radiator cap added at least 10-15 horses on the dyno. [/sarcasm]

Well hey, no matter hw much the radiator cap helps out, it cant beat a good flame vinyl across the side of the car. 75hp minimum.

UR pulley wont help much if anything right now. I would consider it after all other options were exhausted. You'd actually get a pretty good gain from the 9lb flywheel. Thats a 9lb loss of rotating weight as opposed to the .5lbs you probably dropped with that UR pulley.

should later on after i get cams, go catless and a race header... would the UR pulley still be able to be used say if a supercharger was installed?? :D and isnt the 9# flywheel a little to much weight loss?? ive heard that ur RPMs drop in b/t shifts if its too light...
