P5 Jacking Points
 

In the P5 manual they show the front and rear jacking points, and there are little holes cut out of the skirts for the mazda jack, but when using a hydraulic jack I was wondering:

(1) if you want to put jackstands in the jacking points, then what point do you jack from given that you need room to place the jack stand?

(2) if you use the jacking points for the hydraulic jack, where do you put the jackstands?

I've lifted the car a few times, but have never felt extremely confident about where I was placing the jack stands. I just don't want to bend anything, or have the car not be secure when the stands are in place. I tried finding a picture of the underside so it would be easy to mark the points, but I couldn't find one.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

thanks dude for asking this question as i forgot to when i first changed my oil!!! instead of risking the change of doing a fubar to my car, i used the indicated jack points to lift one side up at a time w/ the hydraulic jack. the hard part was making room for the jack stand.

i placed the hyd. jack as far toward the rear of the point that it would still be lifting the car where the metal was strongest, and used the front for the jackstand. even by doing this (took forever and the result still was not what I liked) I still wasnt sure of it. i have seen other cars (like my old 99' Si) jacksed up by the control arms, but ive never really felt comfortable doing that either.

lastly, i HATE the oil filter location on our engine!! it SUCKS!! my old 99' Si simply had to risin enough to quickly draint he oil and that was it! the filter was removed from within the engine bay. thus, lessening the time one must spend underneath a couple thousand pounds!

any info is appreciated greatly.

I've looked at the shop manual and the jacking points aren't very large. If I'm lifting the front of the car, I use either the left or right transport tie points for putting the hydraulic jack under. They are very strong and are designed to hold the weight of the car plus up and down and side to side pressure during transport of the car. Using them as a jacking point works on a lot of cars but not all. Just so happens that ours are fairly beefy. I usually put a rag on the jack so I don't scratch the paint on them. Yeah, I know that nobody looks there.

If I'm lifting the rear of the car, I use the center mounting point for the lower suspension (same thing with the rag). The shop manual actually shows that point as being safe for a jack.

By transport tie points, do you mean the rings that are sticking down on the left and right side in the front? I assume this is what you mean but want to make sure.

if there is a REAL concern that you can't safely use a REAL jack to put your car up for changing your oil....go to Wally World (Wal-Mart for those of you that arn't familer with the term) and buy a set of RHINO RAMPS....they are quite nice and do the job nicely.

Slide the jack under the front of the car and jack it from the suspension crossmember. Then place the jackstands at the indicated jack points on the sides. They list the jackpoints for use with the included jack in the event of a flat tire. There are plenty of other secure places to jack and support the vehicle when using a hydraulic floor jack.
