OilL Filler Cap came off while driving!

Changed the oil last week, 4 quarts in my 1.6 L as usual, but dipstick read a little over full. I ran it anyway, cause it never read over full with this amount before. Yesterday, I noticed oil filler cap had come off sometime, and oil was all over the engine compartment. Oil light never came on CEL never came on, and car drives okay, so I'm assuming no damage? Checked oil, still reads a bit over full. Did this cause any damage? Why does dipstick read overfull with 4 quarts?

No damage. Clean it up and press on!

Okay, but 4 qts with a new filter is right, eh?

check your manual...4 quarts is too much....capacity is 3.2 quarts

'Plus the filter' and if using a v-6 filter - should be just about four quarts...

the 1.6L capacities are not the same as the 2.0L....

he mentioned nothing of using the v6 oil filter...

capacity INCLUDING filter on a 1.6L is 3.2 quarts...

THAT is EXACTLY why he reads over full.....

I always use 3 quarts at an oil change and mine always reads right on(remember some oil is still in the engine)

Thanks for the responses. I checked for any damage, the PCV valve had come out of the valve cover, maybe too much oil pressure? I ran the motor for about 5 minutes to warm it up, sprayed some citrus cleaner on it, waited a few minutes, and hosed it off, it actually came out cleaner than before, cause I never used any type of mild degreaser on the engine before.
I checked my manual, it says 3.4 quarts. I drained some, checked the dipstick, then drained some more. Ended up draining about a quart before it red normal. It seems to run fine now. So it definitely was overfull, hopefully no damage was incurred. I use a 4 cylinder filter. Gonna have to remember this cars oil capacity next time. (I'm stuck trying to maintain 8 different vehicles for me, girlfriend, and family - so, hard to keep track of them all)
Next on the agenda for this car is a bad power steering fluid leak, coming out of passenger side boot of the steerting assemby (rack and pinion). Am I gonna just have to replace the boot, or are there other seals underneath it that I should look at? Thanx

For future reference just use 3 quarts....with the oil that remains in the engine during a change, 3 quarts will always read at the correct level....

The boot keeps dust off the shaft. Your shaft seal is leaking. Bummer.
