Which oil and Filter would you use? Where to buy the filter cheap?
 

I am picking up my P5 on Wed. night and will drive it to 1000 miles and then drain the oil and fill it with some type of synthetic and a good filter. I will then change it every 5,000 miles. They will all be highway miles, I may toy with going 7,500 miles---thoughts here?

Now, on the Nissan SE-R list there is a good following that feels Mobil 1 synthetic and a Nissan filter is the ticket. On the Maxima list it's about the same with some folks taking the Valvoline Synthetic route.


I know there is a search feature in the top right, but I want some fresh ideas on what you guys would use in your motor. I would also like to know what type of filter and where you can buy them in bulk, cheap?

I just did the 1000 mile change in my P5. I used a Mazda filter and Castrol GTX 10w30. I don't plan on running synthetic in the P5 because I just don't drive it that hard and I change the oil ever 3K miles. I run synthetic in the Miata because I take it on the track and drive it quite "enthusiastically" on a more regular basis. I have always used Mazda filters, and most Mazda enthusiasts recommend them. They are high quality and cheap (though some dealers overcharge for them). I get mine in groups of 6 or so from www.mazdaformance.com for $3.95 each. A side benifit is both my Miata and P5 use the same filter :)

Since you are getting ready for your first change, I warn you...the filter installed at the factory is TIGHT. You WILL need a filter wrench most likely, and I recommend the "cap" style rather than the strap style as there just isn't much room for manuvering. Have fun!

I use Mobil 1 synthetic along with a Mobil 1 oil filter. I'm probably going to switch to the Mazda filters, since I change my oil so often anyway. They have a good reputation too.

I also recommend buying a cap style wrench to remove the filter, as there's not much room to work with. Just be careful when buying one though. I bought one at AutoZone that fit the Mobil 1 filter I was buying. Unfortunately, it didn't fit the Mazda filter that was on the car.

we have had these discussions SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many times...and the consensus is.....

if you want to use a REGULAR oil...pick a brand name that meets the required spec and stick with it......change your oil on regular intervals...and use the OEM (mazda) filter.

if you want to use a synthetic....there are a few to pick from and their associated filters or use the OEM filter as well.

now its all up to you to decide.

what was determined from using the larger filter from the v6's? it would be benificial because it can filter more oil but will it affect the engine in anyway since it's larger?
