Oil filter too damn tight...but I learned a new trick

I guess I put the oil filter on too tight last time I changed it. I could not budge that thing for sh*t. Even with a pnumatic rachet:mad:

But I figured out if you take that metal skid plate off you open up a ton of room in there. Four quick bolts and that's it. Gave me room to pound a screwdriver through it. When someone tells you hand tight on the filter...belive it:p

I thought it was a skid plate to protect the 2nd cat. It could also strengthen the frame I suppose. I decided to run without it so I could bend around corners like they do in cartoons :p

Yes, I put it back on:p

Did you hand tighten it the first time. If you did you should be able to get if off easy. It should only put on hand tight anyway. May that will help for next time, so u don't need to take that metal skid plate off.

Are we talking about the same thing here? It's under the car. It's attached to the frame parts and seems to be there for structural support.

No, he went from under neath not from the top........... It is that support bar that is bolted to the undercarriage...

lxpony March-4th-2003 04:20 PM

uh, no...

That black thing that he was referring to is a 4-point suspension brace of some sort. IT has not functionality with the upper intake........

If you need me to clarify what an intake manifold is, please let me know and I will tell you. (putting on flame suit as I type this):D

wow... this is a long drawn out arguement over something stupid. all because he took something off to get to his oil filter. owning a good set of channel locks could have avoided this whole arguement. ;) end it now.. it's stupid. thank you.

Sorry Edwin, but this:
http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/att...&postid=192157
Is not what I'm talking about . If you go directly under the filter, there's a black metal frame like piece that bolts to where the suspenstion and stuff also bolt to the frame.(or what would be the frame if it wasn't a unibody.) I'm sorry I don't have a diagram to show you.:(

I have 3 good pairs of channel locks(not to mention various vice grips and other grabbing stuff) have you ever tried to get anything like that into that space? That's why I had to take that support off.

protetype March-5th-2003 03:18 AM

actually yes... thats how i got the oem filter off when i bought my car. with a pair of channel locks. i know the 2.0's are set up differently.. but there's not too much space behind the 1.6l. and i managed to get in there with a set of channel locks and got the filter off.

protetype March-5th-2003 03:19 AM

and on the note that you shouldnt take shit off if you dont know what its for (i'm sure it was there for a reason)... i'm locking this thread because it's completely retarded. if you have a problem with this.. pm me.
