Im looking into getting an OBD-II interface for the PC, but need to know which I would need.
Anyone know which OBD-II interface we have.

There are three basic OBD-II protocols in use, each with minor variations on the communication pattern between the on-board diagnostic computer and the scanner console or tool. While there have been some manufacturer changes between protocols in the past few years, as a rule of thumb, Chrysler products and all European and most Asian imports use ISO 9141 circuitry. GM cars and light trucks use SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation), and Fords use SAE J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) communication patterns.

Are we more ford or Import? I know our headlights are SAE rated is the rest of the car?


EDIT never mind the pros use ISO, the new mazdas 3's 6's rx-8's use iso CAN which is really nice. Dam them! Can anyone confirm what the 1.6l's have Im hoping that since its a newer engine it might have a newer ecu. THe CAN is a quicker protocol 60 samples per second opposed to 10.

also is there some software which lets us monitor the ECU parameters in real time??? like connects from ODB to laptop and usin some software???

...I had a thought. Not to threadjack, but wouldn't it be useful to list up all of the p-codes from OBD2 in this forum, so that anyone who gets a check engine light is able to cross reference it?

The software is about $100 but there is a strong open source push for it.
I plan on at least trying out a release that looks promising although it might take a bit of work to get it to work perfectly. Im on summer vacation so Ill give it a try.
