Newbie here.....short shifter for 2001?

Hey guys!

sorry if this is a stupid newbie question that has been asked 10 million times before...i'm a Scooby guy, I know practically nothing of Proteges....

My brother-in-law has a 2001 Protege ES (the sport model, with the 16's) and i'd like to get him a short throw for his b-day. Every time I let him drive my 2.5 RS, he freaks out over my short throw shifter, so I'd like to buy one for his Protege. I'm such a nice guy, eh? ;)

Now, I've heard that B&M makes one, but are there any other manufacturers I should be looking at? What does a Protege short throw consist of? Is it just a shorter stick, or like a whole linkage? Also, is it east to replace? I know that on my Scooby, I just had to pop off a few panels and pop in the new stick, but I've heard horror stories about installing one on a Sentra. Since the Protege is FWD, I would assume its linkage is similar to a Sentra, rather than an AWD Subaru.....correct?

Well, you're the experts! Enlighten me! Thanks! :D

aaaahhhhhh, the FAQ......the answers to all of lifes simple questions!

Thanks for the help dude! I'll look into both og those options this weekend....hopefully they arent too expensive. And I hope I can install this myself! :D

Tell ya what scooby. there may be others...but for MY money...the B&M is the best one....its an easy install too...took about an hour. the shifter is not only shorter on top... (1 3/4 inches) its longer on the bottom by 1 3/8 inches...which is how it shortens the throw..the combination of the two length changes... here is a pic of the stock next to the B&M

the only thing you need other than a few combination wrenches is a pair of internal snap ring pliers.

Yeah, i'd much rather have a REAL short throw than just simply a shortened stick. Hows the feel with that bad boy? Stiffer bushings too? Looks pretty sweet!

Sir Nuke March-13th-2002 03:08 PM

Nope....in fact the bushings in the bottom of the stocker are removed...and inserted into the bottom for the shifter linkage bolt to ride in.....of course since the throw is shorter....it also means just a tad more effort...but its minimal....I LOVE the feel of it....so much better than stock.

Sweet! Sounds good! I'm sure my brother in law will love it! BTW, how much does one of these things go for??? :)

Sir Nuke March-14th-2002 08:48 AM
