New sound system
 

I have a 03 P5 and am looking to replace all the speakers in the car. I dont really know a lot abou what speakers are good for certain types of music so im asking for any suggestions any1 may have. I listen to a lot of punk music(good charlotte, new found glory, blink 182 etc....) so ive been looking at some 10s. any1 with any suggestions plz feel free to post

Im going to go with Infinitys myself Ive replaced my 5x7s and 6x9s speakers with them and now I am going to replace my 12 pioneers with them too. I like the quality...though Im sure theres better out there

Audiobahn makes some great sounding speakers but they aren't made for comp any more. depends of if ur going for sound clarity, kewl points with looks (me), or just pure bass

Man, Blink182 and all those other bands aren't punk! Swinging Utters, Bad Religion, Face to Face, Suicide Machines, and Osker are punk. Maybe I'm just getting old...

Easiest way to do it is go around to the sound shops, and listen to the different speakers. Of course, they'll sound different in your car, but listen for key differences.

My 2 personal experiences are between Memphis and Clarion interior speakers. Memphis put some good pounding mids, and decent highs. Clarion had clear sweet sounding highs, and ok mids. I went with clarions for my Max, because I knew I was going to be adding subs later on. That way my Highs didn't really get drowned out by the subs.

good point with the memphis, great sounding speakers. Really all the major name brand speaker will sound good if you replace the stock ones, memphis has some high end stuf i think and will run you around 300 a set installed.

subs if you listen to punk go with 2 10's they will do the trick, hop on ebay and pick your self up a good audiobahn set for like 150 and a amp for around 200, and then you have to pay some one to install it. but if you live in the so cal area give me a 6pack and ill hook you up, any questions just pm me

I love my JL Audio set up. I listen to everything except rap (Frank Sinatra to Ozzy to Jerry Jeff Walker) and the clarity is incredible. As mentioned, listen to various speakers and if possible listen to them in a vehicle. Something about a large room versus a car interior. Also understanding where the placement will be and what may be lost with the speakers mounted at your feet in the doors.

I have to agree with bellydawg JL audio sounds good in my p5 also, listen to everything possible, they will all sound different, it just depends on what YOU think sounds good to you

Well any sub will sound good because its a hatchback! I have have alot and I have to say, If you have the money go Alpine! You can get a decent deck for around 150-200. The rms on the 6x9s are only 50w and the 6x8 40watts. That keeps you from haveing to spend a god awful amount on an amp for them. As far as subs go, I don't know if you have a best buy close but the had a sale on the rockford fosgate p2 subs, box and amp for 300. I have the subs and the alpines with one amp (cost way to much) and it makes my steering wheel jump! :bt:
Alpine is the way to go, I listen to everything from Gepsykings the Marylin Manson to 8Ball (rap) and it is just as clear low or all the way up! Good luck!
ps on an un bias note the infinity 6x9s are just as good. I just went with the name!

The key to knowing how going from a large room to a car interior is actually quite easy. For one thing, a large room allows you to listen to subtle differences a lot clearer.

For one, you change speakers right on the spot, instead of jumping into one car then the other. So you pick up on major differences right away.

Second, anyone who has bought speakers enough knows that they alwayz sound different in the car, than from the display. But, if you find a good display room (i.e. local sound shops) you'll get a better idea than say Sears or Walmart.

Here's an example to give you an idea. When deciding which speakers I wanted, I went down to Mobile FX, and listened to both Memphis, and clarion. Mobile FX has a nice display room setup, but it's still a room. To give you idea for subtle differences.

The Memphis actually pounded the mid bass out. I could hear actual hits, and even get some air flowing around my hand when held about a 8"s from the speakers. But I didn't like the treble from the speakers. A they seemed to be drowned out by the mids.

Clarion, great treble, sounded clear no matter how much I turned it up. And hardly any mids compared to the Memphis.

Now, of course in a car, it's going to change, but to be honest. It never changed that much. I went with the clarions, still has great treble no matter how much I turn it up. And of course, going to a smaller space. The mids came alive, and I have a decent system in there. I actually had a friend ask if I stuck 8"s or if put amps to the back speakers. The mids pounded that much.

Now just imagine putting the Memphis in there. They had alot better mids than the clarion. Almost grounds for not getting subs if you ask me.

I just bought a system for my wife's P5 for her birthday. I went very conservative since it was a surprise (took the car and had it done without her knowing), and I wasn' tsure how much she'd really want from her stereo. I used an Eclipse deck, two eclipse 6x5 speakers in the front doors (nobody sits in the back very often), a Memphis amp, and a Memphis 12" sub in a ported custom box which helped keep her trunk space. I'm VERY pleased with the results, considering the minimal additions I made.

Eclipse headunit and speakers with Memphis amp and subs... good shit man! Are the front speakers amped up as well or is the amp just for the sub? Leaving the rear speakers hooked up to the head unit (as passive rear fill) and amping up the fronts would give best sound imaging.

After youve had the system in the car for a bit, and get used to the sound, critically listen for any rattling etc... then u can think about sound dampening. Dynamat (or even roofing tar) and weather stripping.

As for my car ('03 Black MSP) I went with a JL12w6v2 in a sealed enclosure, a 5channel Precision Power PCX5800 amp for the entire system. I kept the kenwood 5x8 in my front doors (waiting for them to blow), installed Kenwood Excelon 6x9's in the rear deck... these 4 are powered by the aforementioned amp... and for the hell of it I left the 6.5 speakers in the rear doors, those are still powered by the stock kenwood headunit (that crapped out on me last week... but its under warranty so Mazda's giving me a new one... now Im contemplating an Alpine HU). Its loud, and musically crisp- I listen to a great variety of music, so I like having nice highs, mids, and lows... not just a bass machine. Oh and I dynamatted my trunk and placed 3/4 inch weather stipping on the rear deck to cancel out the rattle due to the sub.

audiobahn subs are TERRIBLE lol, the only thing they are good at is being LOUD, and thats good for bass type music (rap, hip hop).... but for something more along the lines or rock/punk/metal, things like that, they sound like shit, you get a heavy bass drum pounding away, or something along those lines and the sub cant keep up with the rythem, and starts to sound sloppy... i'd say go with one (yes one) 10" JL, or pioneer, clarion, kenwood, and a few others, but for the love of god dont get an audiobahn haha... one 10" sub will sound perfectly fine for the application you are talking about doing, just make sure not to underpower it...

I need to retracted my previous statment about the Alpines and the RF P2s, They all SUCK! I had that system in for a bout a month and the subs started to get stress cracks, I like jazz, rap, and H metal and with in a month blew a twiter in the peace of junk 200.00 6x9s. I was smart however in that I bought the warrantys and had it all replaced and changed out the amp for two and new Infinity subs.
So far the inf. hit 100% harder and sound a lot more cleaner. Im in TX so Im sure you know I like country also, I like it loud!

A custom sealed box may sound better to you - because the bass is tighter. Use your favorite CD in the listening room - i use Metallica - that rapid double-bass drum will sound like cr@p on a 12"/ ported box but tight and loud in a 10" sealed...

The opposite is true if you want that big/ringing bass of rap...
