New car break-in period/procedure?

Any suggestions on how to properly go though the break-in period? How long would it take before I can take my car seriously? :)

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't mind an answer to that either, seeing as I just picked mine up lastnight...

Any comments would be appreciated. I drive an automatic...

Try not to take the car above 3,500-4,000 RPM for the first 600 miles or 1000 kms. Don't use cruise control and try to vary your engine RPM all the time. Don't go above 60 mph. Don't slam on the brakes for the first 200 miles. That's all i can think of right now hehe!

What exactly does

"try to vary your engine RPM all the time"

mean?

erikd65 October-30th-2002 10:18 AM

Thats pretty much what I did.... No RPM's above 3000 and not going over 60 and being easy on the brakes. I am over 600 miles now.

BREAK-IN

DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!!;pantdrop;

basically drive it normal for a little while. "vary the rpms" just means don't set the cruise control at 70 and leave it there for 3 hours.

Personally, I don't see a need to have a 600 mile break-in period. If the rings don't seat in the first 10 mins, they never will. The only thing you really need to be concerned about is the gaskets, and after you take around 10 trips, they're as broken in as they're gonna get.

that is just my opinion. (I have rebuilt my own engines tho)

Dinfinitvely ....

Don't slam on the brakes for 250 miles or so otherwise the rotors will get warped

Do not accelerate too hard or the rings will get abnormal exspansion ... that is you slowly work them up to a high speed to prevent them from (lack for a better word) warp(?)

slowly increase the rpms as the car gets older
3000rpm for 500 miles
4000 for next 1000
5000 for next 1000

shifting
do not change the engine speed quickly
that is do not down shift to slow the car down
..... you get the rest

MOST IMPORTANT
change the oil at around 300 miles to clear
out the debris from the engine.

Hope this helps.
