Need Help With Brakes!

My protege P5 has 55K miles and I'm replacing the brake pads. I can't get the rear pistons to retract! I even removed the bleeder screw (thinking it was plugged) I disconnected the emergency brake cable etc. No dice it won't push back in. Any suggestions really appreciated!

hey bud,....you've got some posts and been around for a while. You gotta know to do a search on simple things like this!!

There is a blocking screw on the rear calipers. remove the bolt that looks like it goes to nothing. Underneath you'll find an allen-head bolt...as you unscrew it the piston will retract.

hope you didn't damage something.

Thanks a bunch! I had removed the bolt, but I didn't do step 2 (allen screw) :cookoo:

I did a search for brakes, but didn't find any procedures. Does the allen screw get "reset" to the original position after retracting the piston? Your help is appreciated!

as you wind it out the caliper recesses so you don't want to wind it out too far...just enough to get the pads over the rotor.

I backed out one on a local guys brakes here and for some reason we couldn't get the e-brake to work anymore....i had backed it out too far. We had to go back and screw it in some to make everything work again.

Again, thanks!

no prob Bob.

Yep. I usually tighten mine back up until it just touches the rotor, then back it out a tiny bit.
