Need Advise. Please Help.
Hello everyone! Well I don't have a Protégé or a Mazda yet but I have been reading everything on this site for a while. I was wondering if anyone could help me with my problem anyways.
I couldn't afford to make payments on a P5 just yet so I bought a 1990 5speed 2 door Acura Integra for the time being. Well the guy was real shady but I was desperate for a car so I just bought it. Anyways every time I shift gears it grinds (especially in 3rd). The only way I could shift with out grinding is if I hold down the clutch for a good 6-7 seconds and apply pressure toward the gear that I want to go in then it just pops right in to gear without grinding. It is very annoying to not be able to pop it into the gear that you want when you want. What do you think the problem is, new clutch? New engine? New transmission? I don't know too much about cars so any help will be greatly appreciated. DAM I KNEW I SHOULD OF BOUGHT A P5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You in advance for your replies. |
If it's just that gear, I would say the tranny. I'm no mechanic but I would suspect possibly the synchros.

Thanks kenp1972. I just want to get an idea of what the problem could be before I go to a mechanic. Everyone's out to rip people off these days.

It's your syncros that are bad. You should be able to have the transmission rebuilt. It usually happens in 3rd, like you're having now, and will eventually spread to all the other gears making your car undriveable. You can try to adjust your clutch by turning the knob at the end of the clutch cable on the transmission, but if your clutch pedal pressure seems normal, doing this won't make any difference.

Yep, It's the synchros.

Thank you very much for replying! Dam, is something like that expensive to fix?

The parts should cost around $80 so. It's the labor that's expensive.
