Motor 1.8L VS 2.0L

Hello everyone , i am looking to buy a Mazda Protegé 2000 or 2001.
I would like to know which motor is the best between those 2 (1.8 or 2.0)
And Which Model have the back disk Brake.

Performance
reliability etc

Thanks you very much, hope i posted in the right thread ><

Only the ES model has the disc brakes in the rear. I don't know if they were an option on other models.
Virtually all engine parts are interchangable between the two.
The 2.0 will have a little more HP/Torque but if you are looking at 2000/2001 models I would say buy the one in better shape/lower mileage/has records from previous owner if possible.

Gotta disagree with you Gary.

Longevity and speedwise, gotta go for the 1.8L....

True it makes about 6-7 less hp/torque...HOWEVER...in a race, a 99-00 ES vs an 01-03 ES....if everything else is equal the 99-00 is ALWAYS faster....revs better, cleaner, better powerband....the 1.8L has shorter rods and slightly different crank, and better coilpack system...It's gonna be more reliable...

unless the 1.8L has like 150,000 miles and the 2.0L has like 40,000 miles..I'd go for the 1.8L :bt:

Wow thank you all for tips, i could'nt find a Good price for 1.8L so went for 2L

I'll be soon proud owner of a Mazda Protegé 2001 LX 2L Manual Clutch
106 000 KM Very very Clean , girl driver :tit:.

i'm going to do a Inspection Before buy
Anything i should check specifically on this car , like usual problem or something?
The clutch was really smooth ( easy to push down )
The Driving wheel is REALLY sensitive , i had weird impression on the steering wheel , i had impression the car tended to move on right. But its probably only cuz the road is lean on the right.

Sry for Bad English, i am From Québec City , Canada and we speak French.
I really appreciated your website , thanks a lot for awnsers

You will notice the thing pulling alot depending on the slope of the road, mine gets pushed around like a 16 dollar slut on any kind of groves or slopes

who has the crankshaft specs for the 1.8 engine? is stronger than the 2.0?

macdaddyslomo October-6th-2006 07:26 AM

look on the Protege FAQ....it's not stronger, the rods are shorter on the 1.8 , making them inherently stronger
