Mazdaspeed Shift Knob

I've got a mazdaspeed shift knob for my MP5 but it is way bigger than the stock shifter. Is there a conversion kit that I need in order get the shift knob to fit on my stock shifter? Or does anyone know how to get a hold of a mazdaspeed shifter that would fit a MP5?

Thanks

Are the threads the same? Unscrew the stock one and screw the MS one on?

yeah, i'm running the 03msp knob and it fits perfectly.

Strange, I have an 03 MP5, and the shifter said it was for a mazdaspeed 03.5 protege. However, when i unscrewed the stock shift knob, to my surprise the diameter of the shifter was about 3/4 the size of the shift knob. I shall take a look again, but I've checked it twice so far.

Thanks for your help,
Brad

Do you have this one?
If so, there is a trick to it. The threads of the stock shift lever are not long enough for this knob to fit securely. You have two options:
1) Install short shifter from MSP
2) Go to home depot, buy some nylon collars to tighten the fit between the stock lever and the new knob, and epoxy the collars into the knob. Then, coat the threads with vasoline or other release agent, fill the inside of the knob with epoxy, JB Weld or whatever, and thread it on to the lever. Let it cure, and you will have a tight fit and new threads securing your knob.
I went for option number two, because I like the stock shifter height and besides I am a cheap bastard. The results aren't bad (attached).

The threads to coat are the ones on the lever, NOT the knob....

hello, i bought a stock MSP shifter recently (its sitting at my apt office right now cus it was to big to fit in my mailbox :P) because it came with the bushings i wanted to get, and also because i planned on modifying it myself to make it look like i wanted, but i'm also getting a Megan Racing short throw, SO, after all my ramblings and your wonderings why i'm rambling, i come to my conclusion :D, i'd be willing to sell the stock shifter that i purchased, sans the bushings obviously, let me know if you are interested...

i was about to say DAAAAAAAAAMN your shifter is tall, the knob in my speed sits BELOW the center console trim, sometimes i smash my fingers between the knob and the console if i'm not thinking about it, then i looked at the radio and realized why it was so tall :p...

No ergonomic issues with my setup whatsoever. No taller than stock.

will that knob fit an 01 protege without modification?

JoshP5 July-19th-2007 10:39 PM

No, you'll have to do something like in post #6.
