Mazda's Paint Sucks

Ok I've had it with this super thin paint Mazda put on my car, Every single time I drive it, it comes back with paint chips on the front bumper. Today I got one the size of a dime right around the lower grill area:mad:

Looks like I'll be buying the full front bra, God I hate those things!

Aaron May-24th-2002 04:17 PM

i agree.

Sondra S2k May-24th-2002 04:36 PM

Agreed, but I don't think it's Mazda alone. I've heard similar complaints from Honda S2000 owners and had some issues with rocks and the paint on my S2000 as well.

As I understand it, automakers are using water based paint now, which is environmentally friendlier but less durable. I'm not a fan of it, but I'm just a consumer so my voice doesn't matter much apparently :(

I've heard that too about water based paints. As I said in another thread, my friend's '02 Subaru TS wagon has a ton of paint chips...far more than my Pro and I've had my Pro longer. He's even got a spot of rust because of one of the chips.

We shouldn't just blame Mazda...it's an industry-wide thing!

Makaveli May-24th-2002 04:44 PM

I had all of a sudden a couple of small chips on my spoiler.....

I took it to the dealer, and they had a guy look at it, and I told them that it was the paint that didn't dry long enough, so when they coated it, the vapours made the chips. The guy agreed, and told Mazda that the spoiler would need to be replaced. So free of charge, they gave me a new one :D

zuMP5 May-24th-2002 05:53 PM

I agree with the crappy paint...I love the car but hate the quality of it....paint chips easily, car rattles, & road noise sux....my front end looks disgusting...it looks like its been sandblasted...and thats just from one winter....

NoahsMP5 May-24th-2002 06:06 PM

I must have about 15 good chips all over my car. From hood to spoiler

May-24th-2002 06:18 PM

I don't want to hear all this whining about paint chips. I stripped most of the paint (all the OE paint) with a pressure washer on my white '90 LX. This was after the paint had been falling off in sheets for a few years. It was nice and thick though.

But it was fun sticking business card pieces of white paint on the sides of expensive (dark-colored) cars that parked poorly next to mine.:D

I have been trying to look after my car and its paint to no avail...I hate those swirly marks that appear in older cars but now I have them too....THAT sucks! Any ideas?

I use Zaino on both my S2000 (red) and my P5 (black). No swirl marks, incredibly easy to use (no wrenching your arm off trying to get wax off, this stuff comes off with the tip of your finger once dried), and it lasts MUCH longer than wax.

It's not available anywhere except thru authorized dealers or Sal Zaino himself. You can order it thru Carolina Shine at 704-759-0142 or www.zainobros.com. Zaino Bros doesn't take credit cards (so you would have to mail orders in with a check), but Carolina Shine does take cards.

Hope that helps!

thanks sondra...

I'd love to catch one of you stupid, jealous f*cks slamming someone's car with your piece of sh*t... That's the lamest thing in the world... It would be one thing if you would stand there and do it in front of the owner, but you chicken sh*ts slam it and drive away in your clunker real quick...I HATE YOU PEOPLE!

Oh uh.. Sandpaper..

P5er May-26th-2002 02:03 PM

I'm using Zaino from very begining and it looks great, and it lasts over 6 months. But my sliver P5's hood and bumper is already marked with paint chips (5 or 6). It is very easy to see on light colored car like mine.
When I received my P5 welcome kit in the mail, I've said "man they even thought of paint chips" after seeing little touch-up bottle of silver paint. They know what they are doing!!!!
I had Focus before and drivnig it in the same way over the same roads and I never had a single paint chip problem.
I don't car about water based paint being enviroment friendly if it does not have any durability.
Very disapointing, Mazda.

dkfracing May-26th-2002 05:10 PM

I've got the same thing, there's more chips and scratchs on my car in 7 months then on my 88 honda accord. I think we should all work together and see if we can make Mazda help out with this because it's got to be a warranty issue, and if not lets see if we can make them cover it.

damn it...i loved my car until this thread

sigh:(

brsexton May-28th-2002 03:39 PM

I have a 99 Protege Midnight blue and I have already had to have the front bumper and hood repainted because of the paint chips. The sides of the car still look great, (the factory mud gaurds help alot). I Think its the clear coat...its not as thick as it should be on these cars. Other then the paint....I Love my car.

Samus May-29th-2002 09:46 PM

Also, I agree. I purchased my car used (98 protege, purchased feb 2002, I am 2nd owner) and noticed a ton of touchup on the hood, trunk, and airdam/grill area. I'd say about 8-9 touchups.

I thought the previous owner lived near thornbushes or on a farm or somethin, I never saw a citycar like this.

turns out it has 3 shinny new scratches since I bought it, and i donno how the hell they got there, it must take some tiny tiny piece of road dust to do it...

the whole car will get repainted when i find $1500 bucks anyway, and I'll make sure they dont use OEM paint ;)

Robdoggz May-29th-2002 10:34 PM

whew guess my pain isnt the only one that chips way to easy i have only 2800 miles on it and i have about 5-6 chips on the bumper that apear as black spots and i have two scratch like chips on the hood they also look black i was going to try the touch up paint i was sent by mazda but it looks different and does not really match the paint but its the right color i just think the touch up paint sucks at least mine damn sand color.

paint chip

I just purchased my vivid yellow Mazda about a month ago. When I was waxing my car this past weekend I noticed that I've got a chip on the front of my hood as well as on the bottom of my back right door. Any suggestion on what to do about this? I've read some of the threads and noticed people have been getting touch up paint. How would I go about getting a color to match my car?

Look at the sticker inside the door sill on the driver's side (IIRC). There is a a bunch of writing. At one point there should be a paint code. For example, the black mica pro is code 16W.

Also, I believe it states in the FAQ all the different codes for the paints.

Robdoggz June-3rd-2002 10:36 PM

mazda sent me a start up kit with instructions on how to control the heater/ac stereo etc.. to put in my glove box and a little jar of touch up paint am i the only one they sent this blue box too?

tho i only have 9000 miles on my car i realy dont have to many paint chips

my suggestion: every1 move to miami to avoid winters, also we could have the biggest car club and take over the miami racing scene, kick the hondas out.
-Jason

boostedmp5 June-6th-2002 02:30 PM

I got mad chips in my paint but thats because im always on the highway speeding and on peoples asses. As for taking over the miami honda import scene i dont think so theres more honda ricers out here then you can shake stick at.

Invincibleredp5 June-6th-2002 03:12 PM

a guy can dream can't he?

i believe one day we will live in a world where mazda owners rule. we roam freely throughout the world with no worries what so ever. pure bliss riding in my P5. its not that far away i already have the whole pure bliss part down.
love my baby :D

Welcome kit

Did Mazda just send you a "welcome kit?" I think I may have to call Customer Service. You would think my dickless dealer would have told me about this.

Invincibleredp5 June-6th-2002 10:30 PM

i must be special.

but they left out my turbo or ZEX suprize :(
