Mazda Protege5 Performance stats...

Hi MP5 owners... I was wondering if any one knew what is are cars 0-60sec and 1/4 mile performance. Is there any web site that give us specs on are cars performance? What cars do we compare to in speed and performance?
Also, if we where to do certin modification to give us that faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile what would it be and would it harm are reliabilty on our car?

hmmm....stock, the car is pretty slow...i think the gearing could be a little better...it's kinda like a civic, i think.

with mods, keep in mind that if you do something, you need to make sure that you don't need to do something to offset it...like adding a ton of hp and torque...you need a new clutch...etc.

here's what i've done so far...you can get these parts from www.corksport.com and www.shaneracing.com

injen intake $225
j-spec cams $400
UR Crank Pulley $300
RM Header $400
MP3 ecu
1.8L Updated Coil/wires $100
Pivot Racing Grounding kit $80
Eibach Pro Kit $250
2001 626 Valve Cover $225 (helps to seat the plug wires from the 1.8L coils)
Pacesetter short shifter $100 (switching to the mazdaspeed)
Mazdaspeed P5 axle-back
Iridium plugs $40

I keep seeing you posting these mods. You said you don't have a dyno yet, but do you have any timeslips or anything to let us know how much of a difference all that has made?

Topher February-20th-2004 09:25 AM

lol...nope...i work 6 days a week and my wife and i have a 9-month old...so it's hard for me to make it to a track or dyno...i'm gonna try my best to get it to a dyno sometime next month.

In the Motor Trend's Road Test Results>
Protege5/02 5-speed> 0-60=8.8sec 1/4 mi=16.8/82.7
Slalom=66.4
Hope that helps

i ran my 16.8 at 81.5mph so that's right on target for stock p5s i guess

acidbbg1 February-20th-2004 01:24 PM

I ran 16.3 at the track with intake & exhuast!

Chas

8.8sec to 60mph is adecent number for a 2l engine....

66.4 in the slalom...thats better than most sport cars out there! :D

Pete47 February-20th-2004 07:07 PM

I guess thats ok. I was really curious on what was the 0-60sec and the 1/4 mile. Thanks for that info.
What can we do to bring it faster the right way? Is there any way to find a ECU? How would it help if I where to get one?

andyluss February-20th-2004 07:53 PM

i have a 1999 p5 1500cc VVT japan spec. and ran 16,s at 77 mp,with a mazdaspeed muffler, and bad, stock clutch.

jjac28 February-20th-2004 07:56 PM

with a catback and an intake you can probably shave off half a second ,more with a header but than you'll be adding a lot of noise to your car.

anyhow, if you really want a fast car than go turbo.

Pete47 February-21st-2004 01:58 PM

If I where to go Turbo, What would be the gains and performance that I would have? What kind of cars would I be able to go against:D . How would this affect reliability? How much would it cost to install? I'm in Central Florida, any one knows where to find an installer or where to look?
Thanks...

jjac28 February-21st-2004 02:05 PM

the gains would be v.good...not sure how much though. do a search on that.

as far as i know the reliability goes down with a turbo, it also decreases the lifespan of your engine....
thats why i dont have one.

Topher February-21st-2004 03:28 PM

hiboost:
214 whp
217 ft/lbs torque
@ 8 or 6 psi...i don't remember

14psi = 260 whp.

yeah, you'll gain a lot.

the kit is 4K...and it's well worth it, imo. just dont be stupid and you won't blow your motor.

i'm thinking about buying a motor and building it up with this kit.

If investing in a turbo, installing it yourself is very good idea, but only if your good with mechanics an things of the sort. I just find that if you have some shop install it and something goes wrong down the line the cost could really add up. The gasket blew on the wastegate of my buddys turbo. After he fixed the gasket, the car was bogging ,and went into limp mode. What ended up happening was the filter got clogged in the missing link due to the carbon from when the gasket blew. Now its all set. The whole thing is, if we didn't install this thing and had a shop do it, he would have been like "WTF" is going on. A shop would have charged him a butt load of cash to do these easy fixes. Knowlege is key when doing stuff like this. Your best bet is to DO SOME RESEARCH and do it yourself. You will be way better off.
