Mass Airflow Sensor Problems
 
Hey,

I have an '03 Protege 5 and about two months ago I had to bring it into the shop 'cause the car would shake and vibrate severely when it idled or when I'd pull to a stop. The dealership swapped out my mass airflow sensor and put in a new one. But recently, I've felt a little bit of shaking again when I've pulled to stops and the other weird thing is when I start the ignition the rpms initially start to decrease but after a few seconds jump back up and then start to decrease slowly again.

Has anyone else had a similar problem or a problem with their mass airflow sensor?

My car is just over a year old, so this really bugs me and I'm gonna take it in to the dealer again.

I've not had this problem but it sounds as if your IAT, MAF, and TPS may be not communicating well. Do you have an intake on your car? Where do you live?? If you're close by I may be able to look at it for you before the dealership gets in there anymore.

Wow!! Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately I live in NYC. =(

I havent done any after market work to my car. So it's all stock. Do you have any suggestions on what I should tell the dealership to look into when I bring it in other than the mass air flow sensor?

It was uber inconvenient the last time I had to bring it in and so I wanna this second go-round to be as painless as possible.

no, don't ever mention what you think the problem may be. the dealership will try to hold it over your head later.

Just take it back for for the same problem....have them put the problem in writing stating this is the second time your car has been in for this problem and have the service manager sign and date the letter. Keep it in a safe place. Also make sure you get a detailed receipt (even thoug it's warranty work) of everything that was done to your vehicle. Kepp this safe also.

Keep making notes (detailed) of every problem you have with the car. This will come in handy later on.

yep, my mom bought our 95 dakota brand new, and there has always been a slight rattle in the exhaust, she brought it in a few times under warranty, and it was recorded each time, but since in the notes the mechanics wrote something to the affect of "not neccesary to fix, performs fine" and my mom didn't push it as much as she should, it never got fixed, and after the warranty ran out they diagnosed the problem for real (part of the exhaust pipe going into the muffler was loose and rattled around, didnt leak, just rattled) she told them they had to fix it since she tried to get them to while it was under warranty, but they found a loophole out of it saying that when she had it diagnosed before that she had signed off saying it was fine as long as it didn't hinder the performance, so ya, DETAILED records, and make sure THEIR records show that you WANTED it fixed no matter what... and good luck, car manuf. are REALLY bad about warranty work sometimes, most of it depends on the dealership in my experiences...
