Major vibration in stickshift while in neutral??

Howdy all!!

Okay, I took a P5 for a testdrive and decided to get one as soon as I can afford it, hopefully in the next few months. I was very impressed. The manager let me take it by myself (had a BLAST!). One thing I noticed in this particular car was when I was in neutral and floored it while stationary, the stickshift vibrated dramatically, as in visibly back and forth and out of my hand. Is this normal? My Saturn never did this, but maybe the tranny in the P5 is more rigidly secured to the chassis than the Saturn? I haven't tried any other P5s -- is this normal? I just want to make sure if it's not normal, the P5 I end-up getting doesn't do this before I drive off the lot.

TIA!! Great car!
Josh

yes this is normal. The shifter is linked directly to the tranny in the P5, whereas the Saturn's was likely cable driven.

Yes...since the Engine/transmission are mounted as a unit to the frame and done so on mounts that allow movement...and your shifter is mounted to the floor pan of the car and then connected to the transmission via a shift rod....as the engine/tranny rock when you rev it...it moves back and forth on its mounts...this moves the shift rod..which moves the shifter....normal stuff for this kind of set up

Vibrator?

uh.... I went out and floored my P5 in nuetral with the clutch pedal depressed and released.

I did not notice any visible shaking in any way. I only felt a little vibration in my hand that increased with engine RPM. It seemed like a neat toy for a lonely female that was by herself in the woods to use to slowly work herslelf to orga.... nevermind

All I was saying was that the shifter in my P5 did not vibrate any harder than the garden variety vibrator. I did not notice any shaking violently like he did:shift:
