How loud in reverse?
My Mp3 is very very loud in reverse.
What I mean is the transmission is really whinny. I have replaced the fluid with synthetic, but it still just as loud. Is this normal, does everyone have the same loud noise? |
I've got the same noise I think....It's like a loud "whirrrrrrrrr". sounds normal to me.
|
Yes, it is normal. I think this has been brought up in the past. The whirring noise is because of how the gears are cut. The "straight" cut gears are cheaper to manufactuer, and are noiser. I forget what the other type of gear is called though.

The straight cut gears are called spur gear. They are cheaper to make but noisy because the entire teeth come into contact at once.
The other type (used in the forward gears) are called helical gear. They have spiral teeth so the mesh comes into contact gradually thus quieter. |
my p5 used to be very loud and obnoxious in reverse... but after a while it seemed to go away..... now it is very quite.... i have hearly 14k miles on her now i think.

ok, a spur gear is a description of a gear use, not cut. the gear is straight cut to allow engagement. whereas the forward gears use what's called dog tooth engagement, and the actual gears are helical toothed. think of it this way: the forward gears are always in engagement, and the revese gear is only engaged when in reverse. the straight cut gears on the reverse gear allows for ease of engagement and extra strength, however straight cut gears make a hell of alot more noise than helical cut gears.
the short of it: it is normal for that noise and nothing is wrong. |
