I pay 202 monthly for 6 mo w/ 450 down payment....but you know what really pisses me off....I got a letter from my insurance co saying they will no longer insure me because I have 2 speeding tickets and my wife got into 2 very very minor fender benders....I mean the accidents weren't even that bad...all that happened to both cars was paint coming off the bumpers....by the way....I'm 22 my wife is 20 and we are insured by Geico....

Next time, if you have a small fender bender you should ask the other person if you can pay for the accident out of pocket. For little paint scrapes you will pay less than your deductible probably and it will keep you on good terms with your insurance company.

I suggest you call your insurance company and ask them to let you talk to your Underwriter directly. The underwriter is the person who decides whether or not the company will insure you. Perhaps you can work something out with them. Perhaps a traffic course or something, and they might let you stay with their company. Perhaps ask if you can go into a different market?

I am 32 and pay around 580 a year for insurance on my 02sedan. Be aware that insurance rates will be going up this year...considerably!

First off: If you ever get hit by someone who has State Farm-theyll rip you off. Get an attorney. I, also, would never use them=but thats just me.

As far as my insurance rates? I pay about $100/UDS a month for mine and that full coverage. I use Progressive and I'm 25 and married w/child. But I got the car before I was 25 and before my little girl was born.

I read all the posts here, and I go wtf. You can't all base insurance rates on just age and car.

Finally someone speaks some intelligence.

I just checked the Florida Department of Insurance for rate comparisons between companies. Other states probably do the same so you should check with them also. For three different scenarios, a 18 year old single male, a 40 year old married couple and a 71 year old single male, the lowest rates for all companies compared were from State Farm and USAA. These rates were compared with IDENTICAL coverages which is the only way you can get a good comparison when calling around. On all counts, Liberty, Geico and Allstate were among the highest. If you want to compare rates, decide what coverage you want and get a quote on the specific coverage. If you don't specify, you don't know what you are getting. Company A may be $50 cheaper but may have $100,000 less coverage than company B.

I don't think anybody here has just been basing insurance rates on age and car.

Many people have said, "I have no accidents" or "I have one ticket" or "I'm married" etc. etc.

However, would it not be fair to say that your age AND the car do play a large role in determining your insurance rate? I think so.

To an extent yes. But looking at the Department of Insurance information, I found just as big of a difference between coverage limits as age and vehicle. I can call around right now and save myself $500 a year but I'll also be going from $500,000 liability limits to probably $25,000.

Right...all I'm saying is that if you went to insure an S2000 as opposed to a Ford Escort, all else being equal, you'd probabaly get different insurance rates.

zeriak July-17th-2002 11:56 AM

Where you live is the #1 basis off of what insurance companies make you pay. You could be a single 18yr old male with an S2000 living in Podunkville, Oklahoma and you will pay about as much as a 26 yr old married male with a Protege5 in New York City.

Insurance is Where you live, Car, Age, Sex, Driving Record.

...coverage, discounts, vehicle usage, where parked, etc....

Some companies are factoring in credit ratings also.

My insurance is thru State Farm. Excellent coverage at an excellent price.

zmzmp5 July-17th-2002 11:17 PM

When owning my 2001 Type-R, the rates per month were 87 dollars, raised to 95 dollars, then to 83 dollars. Now that I replaced that car with my MP5, the rate is 85 dollars. Insurance told me that the MP5 wasn't listed "as safe" as the Acura. Go figure.

Yeah, but we all have Protegés and Protegé5s here. You are comparing 2 different cars in different classes. We are all comparing similar cars. Yet MAJOR differences can be found in both age, sex and driving record. As I stated before a difference of over $1000 CDN a year can be attributed to sex for a young driver. You really can't compare with one another unless you have identical coverage, live in the same area, and are the same age and sex with same driving record. Once one of those factors change it could change the quote by hundreds of dollars. Now change 2 or more of those factors and it could change it by thousands. No point comparing insurance between people, but between companies. To find out if you are getting ripped off, go to other insurance companies, go to other brokers and do some research.

I live in Toronto, big for Canada, and if I were to move to a smaller city and get insurance there, I'd pay about half what I'm paying now. So location can have a big effect. Let's just say that I see all the numbers and to me it is irrelevant, unless you can find someone of my age and status, living in the same city, and has the same record as me. But I'm not going to find that person...oh well...
