How different are the Proteges' handling?

This question is primarily directed to those who have driven the MP3. I would like to know how differently it handles to the Protege5 and wondering if it was really what it is sometimes hyped up to be. If anyone have driven the two, can they please post some unbiased comments regarding specifically the difference in handling performance and capabilities of the two vehicles.

Also I would also like to know about the handling performance differences of other Proteges (stock of course). I have driven my gf's 97 Protege SE (DX in US) and originally expecting something that handled like a Corolla, I was surprised it handled more like a 5. The steering effort even seemed heavier, despite being a little bit less responsive and precise, but the handling was nearly on par with the 5, maybe more body roll, but amazing nonetheless.

Only wish the 1.6L made better engine sounds when revved and especially more power.

I drove a MP3 right before I bought my P5. The MP3 is noticablly nimbler. The P5 feels heavier. I did not get to go on any major twisty's. I can't remember any difference really in power though, only engine sound. The MP3 rides like it on rails. Both cars have excellent steering but the MP3 likes to snap into corners faser. A lot of this could be the much better tires on the MP3. I heard some reviews were the P5 has great potential to out handle an MP3 due to its more neutral weight distibution. You can get all the MP3's suspension parts for a P5 at www.Mazdastuff.com or through your dealer.

Since you wanted opinion about P5 versus other Protege's I would just mention that when I drove the P5 and ES I noticed only a slight difference in handling. I found the P5 to be a little sloppy compared to the ES but both drive pretty much the same. The ES rolls a little more (but that can easily be remedied, just fix that strut tower brace handicap).
