Hood Paint chipping.
 

Hey all,

I drove past 2 salt trucks that were spreading the stuff the size of gravel, it smacked on to every car that passed the truck. So now i ended up, prolly like some cars, with small paint chips from the salt rocks on the hood, smaller than the size of a finger nail, but deep. Is there any way i can fix them?? Use touch up paint after washing the car?????

I know that sooner or later it will rust out and eat away at the paint and the metal. I just want to nip this in the bud before I have a rusted out hood months or years down the road.
By the way I live in Soviet Cannuckistan (Canada) where the weather is cold and snowy half the year lol.

Definitely clean it and put some touch up paint on it. I have tons of rock chips on my car :mad: including a nice deep gash on the hood. The Vivid Yellow is teh suck when it comes to paint chipping too!

I'm sure there's a tutorial on touch-up paint on autopia.org, and I'm sure it's way overkill. Basically you need to get some touch up paint, clean the area around the chip with alcohol or some other degreaser, and touch up the chip. Use a toothpick rather than the little brush, and you can get the paint just in the chipped area. it's like coloring, the goal is to stay inside the lines. After the touch up paint is dry and set up for a few days, you should wax the area that you cleaned with alcohol.

What's worse is the big nasty chunk that came off the black part of my hood when I was washing & waxing...I didn't have any black touch-up paint, so I dotted it with a black Sharpie ;) Ended up getting 2 or 3 trophies even after that!!! LOL

Sure wax will be enough? I've got alot of white chips too on my hood my goal is to totally repaint the hood eventually, will touchup gloss work if its available say after i use a classic red for the chip pieces?

Eventually i need to start a thread on fiberglass chunks repair but in its own thread when I can afford to ask such question...

I just washed and waxed my car...It really brought out all the chips. THEIRS SO MANY OF THEM! I kept wiping over them thinking it was fuzz from the towel, but nope, chips...

I hope to be able to eventually get a new paint job...

www.colorrite.com. They have touch up pens in exact color match. Costs a few bucks but their quality is good, and they even have clearcoat pens. The tough part when touching up chips is getting the pit filled in so it matches the level of the rest of the paint.

Another thing to try instead of a toothpick is the butt end of a paper match. They work great, plus it gives you an excuse to visit a bar to pick some up!

Would, in the future, getting a plasic hood cover help with the debris and crap flying twoards the car? By the hood cover I mean the black wide ones that some ppl have attached on the front of their hoods to minimize debris damage. Any sugestions?

You might also try the vinyl covering that protects against rock chips and whatnot. I know of a really nice Saleen w/chrome everything, show car bling bling, and the owner uses that vinyl to keep the front end free of road rash. When you look at the car you don't even notice that it's there.
