High pitch Whining at ~2500-3000rpm!
 

Hey guys and gals,

I have a high pitched whining coming from engine area at a bout 2500-3200 rpm ~110 -~120KPH! It can be altered by pressing on the gas, so I know its not a wind noise and I know its not the radio because it was not on. JUst wondering what could make this noise. I have a drop in K&N if you want to call this a Mod :)

I searched for similar experiences and D-man had hid Cat replaced, but there is no rattle or anything and car smells ok. No real noticeble sulfer smell or anything like that. Anybody experiencing similar noises.

I haven't had a problem like that in my P5 but I did have a problem like that in my Mustang I use to own. I had a whining sound from the rear of the car and it only did it around 2000 rpms. The problem was I had a leak in the rear end and needed new gears. The gears for a front wheel drive car will of course be in the front of the car. Try looking for a leak in the front end.

Do you mean tranny fluid? Oil? I did recently do a oil change and checked my oil before my trip to Niagara Falls, but not since. Where will it be most noticeable. I highly doubt this is my problem as I suffer no real effects other then the noise itself. But I'll have a look at lunch. Anybody else with this problem?

Green Skanka also had a whining noise at higher RPM from my searches. Are you still around and if so, did you find a fix. I am under waranty, but I don't know if its a problem or not as it really has no adverse side effects other then the noise! I did recently (within the last 5000kms) replaced my plugs to Bosch Plat 2's and niticed no real change at the time as my denso's were in great shape. Very impressed how those denso's held out after 40000kms! :)

I'm talking about grease on the outside casing, where the gears are. Under the car. Not oil or tranny fluid. The gears are always greased before they go into a car, or they should :D

I have had a whining sound from other cars (3 Saturns) and the noise was attributed to the alternators. One of them quit while I was driving (you'll know when the battery light comes on after the whining stops), had it replaced, no more whining.

Replaced the 2nd one (different car) before going on a trip, didn't want it to go out while I was away from home and dependent on the car.

Still waiting for the 3rd one to go (wife's car, she doesn't travel very far from home), has been whining for over a year. Had the mechanic check it and the ouput is in range, but a little on the weak side. This is a common Saturn problem.

This is my 1st Mazda, everything great with it so far.:D

Check to see if all of your belts under the hood are tight.

Check out this TSB in the FAQ. What you describe seems to match this.

Thanks a lot and to all others who tried to give me some usefull help. :) I think that the FAQ is right on the mark and I hope its not just BS to cover their a$$! It clearly states that it will not affect my value of my car as it is just a resonance sound from gears.:( I hope they don't fall back on their word when I trade it in a couple of years.

I really hate the "Its normal for this type of car" routine that dealers dish out! One of the main reason I sold my 98 Mystique. Fords most famous saying in Carleton Place was "Its normal for these cars" Apparently its true as after they ditched the Contour and Mystique, the Focus ended up suffering all the recalls that they had for the contour and myst. Oh well , I love my 01 protege and am glad that its nothing to worry about. Here is the FAQ TSB!

Some customers may hear a high frequency whine that occurs at approximately 45 and 75 mph, this noise usually can only be heard with the radio and blower motor off and when the customer feathers the throttle within a very narrow RPM and MPH range. This whine is considered normal and no repairs should be attempted. This whine is not the result of any abnormal wear occurring within the transmission but is a result of a resonance that is generated at varying levels between the primary and secondary gears and does not affect the use, safety or value of the vehicle.

Can the resonance of the Gears be fixed by changing a fluid or a flush or something. I am ready for a tranny flush, will this help or is it just the gears/grease that becomes the problem at higher RPM!

I have a whining noise also, maybe similar to yours. You mentioned it alters when you hit the gas. My noise could be best described as a faint disc brake squeel noise only with NO throttle. It goes completely away with any throttle and is most apparent at around 3000RPM. Is this what you have? I doubt my problem is transmission related... Also it was there with the stock air intake on and is still there with an aftermarket intake. I'm thinking it a vacuum leak somewhere:(

i have a high pitched whinning at 85+ mph at near WOT...... thats probably about 4000+ revs though.... sounds like turbo... or more like engine straining to make more speed

i changed to redline MT90 tranny fluid and i had the sound AFTER 1000 KMS of driving. it wasn't there with stock tranny fluid
