I'm surprised you don't like the look of the MazdaSpeed Protege but you like the look of the Protege5. The front end of the 2003 MSP is exactly the same and they have the same side skirts. Unless you saw a 2003.5 MSP. They have a weird looking lip spoiler that I don't like. Along with a different spoiler and other things.

If it was the 2003.5 MSP that you saw, you might want to take a look at a 2003 MSP. You may like the looks of it.

The P5 I spec'd on MazdaUSA came to like $19k. If I could get it for like $16k or so it'd be way easier to choose. Is Mazda running any promotions?

I just checked on edmunds and it looks like they are offering $1750 cash back on the P5. You should easily be able to negotiate the 19K down to $17,750. Then take off the $1750 and you're sitting pretty at $16K.

I have no idea what year it was. I guess I just like the rear-end better on the P5. Looks sportier to me. I also liked the interior better in the P5 (leather versus some weird looking cloth in the MSP).

It probably didn't help that it was some nasty looking orange paint. I'd call it "Reflective Puke Orange". No offense to anyone who drives a "Reflective Puke Orange" MSP. :D

If it was orange then it was a 2003 MSP. For 2003 they also sell it in black. For 2003.5 are supposed to be yellow and grey.
