woah, big pics, VERY nice header! what does the lack of VTCS feel like?

Roddimus Prime August-21st-2005 10:39 PM

looks good. I'm also interested in the no-vcts.

How hard was the install? It makes me wanna put mine in real bad but I'm looking into getting it ceramin coated first....

THAPRO1 August-22nd-2005 09:22 AM

install was pretty easy, the only things that are a pain is connecting the EGR tube and getting the doughnut gasket off the old exhaust flange to put on the new one....(note make sure you do this or at least order one before doing your install i didn't put it on and i ended up having to undo the header again and put it on because you'll make alot of noise and have a huge exhaust leak) other than that its not bad at all,

as far as no vtcs....its awesome along with the header....no more irritating rattle when you turn the car on, and that strange dip in power when you accelerate is gone, it pull's hard right up to redline all the time now, it almost weird like i had to learn how to drive the car again to some degree because i'm so used to it being kinda fast than the power dips and then it goes again but now you put your foot on the floor and the car pulls hard:D....def worthwhile mod...plus its free!
peace

to remove the vcts dont you have to disassemble the intake manifold? How long did that take you?

Matty Mooling August-22nd-2005 10:51 AM

no rattle? i'm interested. what all is involved?

dudeondacouch August-22nd-2005 10:52 AM

egr was definately a pain

as far as getting the donut off.. a chisel works quite well. (metal chisel, not wood chisel)

what we did...i'm giving the credit to my friend ryan as he did most of it...is
1. removed the intake manifold(be carefull as it has a paper gasket)
2. you'll see the vtcs flaps right there when you get it off..the easiest way to get the screws off of the butterflies flaps is to use visegrips on the screws first to loosen them otherwise you'll strip them with a screw driver...loosen them and then use a screw driver to remove them then take the flaps off ...and thats it then just put the intake manifold back on and make sure everythings in place and start it up

one other thing we did is removed the EGR tube and cleaned it...if you choose to do this MAKE SURE you put the tube back on before putting the manifold back in you'll never be able to get it back in straight otherwise, we did this and ended up getting everything hooked up and running but we had a leak where the EGR tube screws in to the intake manifold so we had to take everything out and do it over....all in all it took us about 4 hours to do it...but thats because we messed up and had to fight with the egr, if not we took everything out removed vtcs and put everything back in and had the car running in about 2and a half hours or so but that also included lunch and fooling around:D so figure about 2+ hours...def worth it

i'm not sure how much power it adds but you can really feel it.....i'm guessing with everything i have done now i'm making something in the 140-150 range at the crank of course....only reason i say this is because i raced a 2.0 3 the other night that was 5speed and walked away from him and the 2.0 3 has around 148hp at the crank also factoring in that proteges are somewhat lighter than the 3 i'm guessing i'm somewhere around that power wise....what do you guys think i've never been good at estimating things like this but i would think 140-150 may be about right
