FYI for Exhaust sytems on Gen3s
 

Just thought I’d pass along some trial and error information on exhaust set ups I’ve been doing on my Gen3 Pro 1.6. I’m on my third system a Bosal Federal Cat. Back. Which by the way, is by far the best set up I’ve tried. I have to give a shoot out to Rishie for the Bosal; you’d the man! The sound is great not to load but load enough and the response is way better than any other setup I’ve tried, a very noticeable difference. The other setups have been a flowmaster with OEM cats installed and removed. A Reactive muffler with a big enough hole though it to but your arm though with OEM cats installed and removed and a high flow Random Tech cat the loudest system. Note: I’m running no catalytic converter right now the second one was removed by the Bosal federal system and I removed the catalyst material from inside the first cat. Car runs great! And yes the sound is no where near as load as it was with the fat-ass Reactive muffler and Random Tech cat. In fact with window up and radio at a low level you can’t even hear it. If any body is interested in a used Reactive muffler and random High Flow cat ready to bolt up to a Gen3 Sedan (about six months old with 2.25 pipe to the flags) make me an reasonable offer and it ours. Also I have a set of clear tails (the style with the reflector on the side) and a MP3 strut bar with non-cruse mounts to get rid off to the first reasonable offer. Anybody what to trade an AWR rear sway bar for a Racing Beat MP3 rear sway bar? Sorry to get of subject. I hope my trials and money wasting helps out my Proteges.

Thanks for the info. I am considering ordering a bosal cat back from Rishie. How is the service? Any opinion on the california bosal system?:dunno:

I got my exhaust from Rishie with in a week from when Bosal got it. It was drop shipped to me but Bosal had ran out of the sedan exhaust and had to restock their supply. But I would recommend Rishie to anyone. I love my Federal exhuast, the sound is awsome and only loud when you get on it hard, or downshift at high RPM's. I am also very happy with the way it all just bolted right up with no mods needed. Very nice system from Bosal, I just wish they made the muffler look less "can like". But satisfied none the less. :bt:

On the federal version of the bosal, is there somewhere to insert the second O2 sensor? Since there is no cat, just a resonator, I was curious. I couldn't tell from MP3-Owner's pictures. I may get the cali version, that way I can eventually get a header and still have at least one cat. Then if I so choose, I could replace the OEM cat with a high flow one. We'll see I guess...

Rishie is awesome! Because I live in MD and Bosal is in NJ Rishie had the system drop shipped to me only took about week after I paid him. As far as O2 sensor, it is on a small down pipe about a foot long after the first cat under the exhaust header. I know the Federal system replaces everything except that small down pipe, and I'm 99.9% sure the Cali system is the same. So if you got a header that replaced the first cat exhaust manifold and the down pipe then you would need a pung in the header for the second O2 sensor and of course the first O2 sensor and EGR tube which a mount in the exhaust header. This holds true for all the 99-01 Protégés to include the MP3 which a had for a month till it was totaled. About the can look, the Bosal looks a lot more discreet than the Reactive muffler that I had which was a really huge can look like I was can a bomb under the car. Plus with the different tips you can bolt on, not weld on a plus, you can give the Bosal any look you want.

That's a pretty sharp looking exhaust! Fully polished. Very nice.

I'd want a deep sounding muffler. Not a high-pitched buzz but a deep tone that gets just a touch raspy at WOT. I've seen cars around with this type of sound but I don't know the muffler that does it.

Get the Bosal. You just described exactly the way it sounds. My car even has a pretty cool back fire sound to it while hitting WOT shifting from 1st to 2nd, kinda like a Rally car. It is a great muffler system, easy install was the best part. :D

I've got mine on order right now from Rishie... I tried emailing Eric F and Sir Nuke about installation... I'm really looking to see how hard it was to remove the stock exhaust piping, and what tools were needed to do it. If any of you that installed it yourself can help me, i'd appreciate it so when I get it I can down n dirty with it without any real problems.

rishie and mitch (from protege5online) are different dudes right? I saw mitch's price for the bosal, what's rishie's price?

I'll probably have it drop shipped to me directly from bosal as well, since I live in N. Va.

The tools needed for installation were just basic socket wrenches and a little WD-40 to get the rubber hangers to let go of the stock system and make the new one easier to put in. THATS IT! :)

As far as Rishie and Mitch being two different people you are correct. I think they are both about the same on the price($380).
