front passenger door rattle continues...

i've went to different dealers many times to try and fix my front passenger door rattle. the rattle sounds like a ticking noise from the upper right portion of the door with the window up or down.
it goes away if i press hard on the panel.

the dealers first deny it, saying its my water bottle in the glove box, so i took eveything out of the car and made a tape recording of the noise. they finally acknowledged the noise and insulated with foam tape, replaced the door panel, replaced the window regulator and motor...still rattles.

now they won't touch it until they get an ok from the mazda service rep. i'm still waiting for them to call.

can anyone here help me with a solution or ideas, thanks all.

I too have this problem- exactly as you have explained it except in mine its the driver side front AND the rear passenger side door. I had the dealer take a look at it a couple of times. Problem is at the time I was trying to get them to fix my loose seat (damn thing would shift left and right in hard cornering). That seemed more important so I kinda never got the first thing resolved (REALLY annoying on long trips). I did get the seat fixed :) and am currently living with the ticking. It seems far less frequent now and I find when it does begin to tick I can stop it (usually) by rolling the window up and down a couple times.

Sorry I'm not more help.

Actually, come to think of it - it's still there in the rear door but it's been replaced in annoyance by the new rattle of my cup holder lid... and the squeaking of the plastic around my radio. Oh well. What are you gonna do. Car still brings a smile to my heart. :D

I had a rattle in my driver side door as well. Knowing the dealer won't be able to fix it I gave it a shot with some foam tape and that fixed it. I posted a thread on how to do it a while back and you guys can take a look at it.

Rattle is so hard to trace and I think the best way to fix them is to do it yourself. No one knows your car better than you do.

hey sage...about your loose seat...what part did they replace in order to fix that?

Door rattle too.

I have the EXACT same rattle in the same place on the passenger door, must be a design flaw. They spend an hour working on it, and didn't come up with a fix. It still rattles, but it's going back on Wed. so if anyone knows what to look for, I'd appreciate any info I can pass on to the dealer.

I had a rattling door too. I went to dealer explained to them the striker (lock) in out of order. What do you know, that fixed it. Sometimes I can hear little rattle comming from the weather strip, but that's nothing compared to clicking in the lock. may be that is what you have(just an idea)

No way i have...well i dont if its the exact same place where the rattle comes from or if its as loud. But i have a rattle coming from shotgun. I think its the window/door kinda thing. i still can't pinpoint the damn noise.

thanks all for your ideas, comments
the noise i have seemed to get worse when the tempeture is cooler outside like early mornings or later at night
i like to have the dealers work on it since its under warranty
dont want them to have another excuse saying i cause it by opening up the panel myself
if they cant fix it, then i'll work on it myself
i'll post a resolution as soon as i get one

did anyone notice a metallic sound from the front end when the go over speedbumps or just any bumps at low speed?

thanks again for your thoughts...

First of all - neither you nor the dealer is going to locate the source of the rattle when the car is sitting in a repair bay or you are driving alone.

If you want to locate the thing, have someone else drive your car while you seek out the rattle - that's the only way you're gonna find it. Once you find it, fix it.

Same problem. I thought I blew a speaker for awhile. I sound deadend my front 2 doors and they still rattled. I think it might be the lock .
Where do you find foam tape? Thats my next option.

firefly July-28th-2002 02:36 AM

You should be able to find foam tapes in any stores that carries automotive parts (like Pep Boys in the States or Canadian Tire in Canada). The ones I have are foam/sponge with some double sided tapes. It comes in a 3m (about 10 ft.) roll and should be more than enough to fix the door rattle.
