Focus...Protege Engine
 

Since the 2.0 Mazda Protege and the 2.0 Ford Focus essentially use the same engine (ford bought mazda)... could focus engine parts fit on a Protege???

Just because they share a displacement and are made by the same company does not mean they are the same. That 2.0L on the Focus has been around a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time in Escorts (and in SOHC form is a piece of crap, and in DOHC form is a noisy piece of crap). The 2.0L in the Protege is borrowed from the 626.

Actually, the base 2.0 SOHC Focus engine is derived from the original 1981 Escort engine. The DOHC Focus engine (ZETEC) in a new clean sheet design that first debuted in the US in the Contour. The engine family has been available in Europe in a wide range of sizes, from 1.3 to 2.0L for longer than that.

The 2.0L engine in the Protege is older than the ZETEC, but newer than the Escort motor.

Zetec is derived from Escort 2.0L. Lots of parts are interchangeable. Ford does not go and design a new block on a whim.

Sorry kc5zom, but you are wrong. The ZETEC is totally different from the old SOHC and was a clean sheet design.

Lets get this straight.
The Protegé and the Focus do not share the same engine,nor the same quality standards so lets stop comparing!

KrisA is right the 2.0 zetec is not the escort 2.0. I can't remember the name of that engine it's some thing like CCH or sometthing like that.

The only changes made to the ZETEC versus the SOHC were those necessary to facilitate DOHC. They are very different engines (heads etc.) but the ZETEC is derived from the 2.0L Escort engine. There hasn't been a "clean sheet" design for a whole engine from Ford (or a lot of other manufacturers) in a long time.

I actually liked the Zetec, unlike our engines, a turbo has been developed and the contour guys are getting close to 300hp now with some of them (scary thought). In the focus it makes for a really peppy car, more then ours even though ours puts out about the same hp. As for the durabilty they are a bit more spotty then the mazda's but since thier are a lot more of them, fixing them is a bit cheaper and since the focus is fairly popular, mods are relatively easy to come by.

The noise of that engine with a manual transmission is almost unbearable. I couldn't stand it in either the ZX2 or the Focus ZX3. But when you mate it to an automatic it is actually really quiet. Oh well. I wasn't able to find another vehicle as loud as the Focus with a manual when I was shopping and I drove just about everything.

Try my Duratech 2.5 she's really loud:) Anyway I thought that the zetec was just as loud as the pro. However, I found it much easier to get a quick launch out of the ZX3 instead of the pro. The pro on the other hand handled a lot better. As for the zetec being noisy, I haven't noticed it being so bad especially compared to the pro at highway speeds. The zetec contours were pretty quiet (from what I remember) but lacked the oomph (stock ATX). Personally I thought that the focus ATX really sucked kinda like the pro ATX. I would put up with the extra noise for the added performance of the manual. (even if the focus manual is a little weird feeling with it's tall shifter.) In fact a ZX3 maybe replacing my contour, I'm just kinda waiting to see what the 2nd gen will look like along with the mazda 3/6.

So far IMHO the Sentra has us all whipped in the quiet engine category. But it is a boring drive (more rewarding than a Civic LX though). It came down to a choice between a boring car with lots of comfort features (lots of storage, decent stock sound system, lighted vantity mirrors, leather wrapped shift knob and steering) and a fun ride with most of those features. I guess the fun ride won. I won't be buying a Focus until they add a rear-stabilizer bar (or front, I can't remember which one it was missing but I believe it was the rear). Oh yeah. And disc brakes on all four corners. Screw those lame ass drum brakes. And some 16 inch wheels might not be too bad. Did I mention white faced guages? Oh well. I personally think the Focus is just a better looking Escort, but they fixed most of those problems in the SVT (except for the reliability, 1 recall - 20 to go).

if i remember correctly, the british web site that talked about the Zetec swap did so with an engine from a pinto (its not the same as the US version people)? i believe its also used in quite a few 'kit' cars from england.

also, i thought that yamaha helped ford design the Zetec motor, as they also helped them design their F1 Zetec engine.(the two ARE NOT related!)

not sure why americans think so poorly of the zetec motor-its actually not quite bad at all. its no worse than our 2L FS-DE engine, IMHO.

Although I am not sure about yamaha designing the Zetec, Yamaha designed the Taurus SHO and Celica GTS engines. They are known for helping with designing high output engines (look at their motorcycles, jet skis, and ATVs).
