First long trip with synthetic oil (mobile 1)

Took my first long trip down to south jersey and NYC with mobile 1. Going down on sunday, I went 399 miles on 12.65 gallons (31.54 MPG), going 80+ mph with the AC on the whole time. That is above what I got ith the petro oil. especially going that fast. A little traffic and some city driving included in this, too.

Coming back I went 365 miles on 13 gallons (28.07 MPH), but drove much more aggressive. Had the AC on the whole trip, too. More traffic coming back and I was driving much faster then on the way down. There were times on the Garden State Turnpike that I was averaging 85+ for long periods (4000 + RPM's).

Very happy with milage after changing to synthetic.

what was you mileage before you changed over?

Protege52003 August-13th-2003 06:06 PM

I would get close to 30 going w/o AC maybe a little more or less. Also depending on the speed you are driving affets milage. I got close to 35 MPG last june driving up to bar harbor, with 50 % driving on rt 1 (45-55 MPH).

I seem to be getting my average weekly driving around 25 MPG with the synthetic when I used to get around 22-23 MPG in the petro.

I have noticed that the engine temp guage runs 5 degrees cooler than it did with the petro oil........

I am very happy with the change to symthetic and believe it is better for the engine in the long run although so is prtro-oil if changed according to cars specs.

Synthetic oil does not break down as fast and has been proven to decrease friction between the metal parts in your engine.

How many miles on the car before you made the switch over? I've heard that there is a recommended milage period before switching over to synthetic, to allow for a complete break-in of the motor. Once upon a time I thought it was about 10K miles.

I switched over at 6K miles, and also changed my tranny fluid to synthetic as well. Average 36.5 on a round trip from Phoenix to Santa Barbara with the A/C off and averaging 80mph.

Did mine around 10,500 K. Heard to let the engine break in, but I have heard that others do it on the first oil change around 3k. I don't really think it matters, you should not keep changing between the two though. Once you go synthetic, you should not go back........
