engine break in?

Yet another P5 newbie question/opinion search...

In the manual for the car they suggest that there really is no break in period other than the first 1000km (600mi) in which you should not push the engine too hard or "performance drive" the car. My dealer also suggested that I keep the revs under 4000rpm for that duration and that I try to not keep them constant.

So... what do y'all think? Is taking a 150mi trip on the highway bad for the car? How much variation in engine RPM during driving is good? Do I really want to wait the full 3000mi interval before changing the oil?

Any other insight/comments/suggestions would be greatly welcome.

thanks! and my P5 thanks you as well!

Everyone has their own theory on breaking in the engine. I stopped by my dealer today to pick up something and asked him this question. He told the technology used to build today's engines are very different than 10 years ago and the quality has improved. The material used (alloys) are also much better than what they used to use. That's why it's not as critical as it used to be.

BUT, of course when you get a new car, you'll try to avoid any possibilities of hurting the engine, especially with such a nice car! :)

I just hit 1000kms tonight and I've been varying the speed from 90km to 130km. I drive 90% highway 10% city. I'm still going to baby the car a little longer. The owners manaul says to change the oil at 8000km (5000miles) and that's what I plan on doing. 5W30 should be good.
