Dyno run on P5

Thought I'd pass along some P5 NA numbers that will be improved upon shortly. The car has 4500 miles on the clock.

Ran a dyno check yesterday on my P5--Injen CIA, MagnaFlow CB--and came up with 104 WHP, 114 lbs/ft of torque. Crossover for the two was 5200 rpm. Three pulls came on a DynoJet chassis dyno at MAC Sport in Parker, Colorado. Great guys, BTW!

One thing that stood out--the engine went rich on all pulls in 3rd gear at about 3800, from a reading of around 14.2-3 to 12+. ECU is the problem. Doing some checking, I found that the MP3 chip should cure the problem. This means a leaner, more perfect mixture at higher revs (want to hit 14.1:1 or as close as possible throuhout the range to 6500). Problem is, find the chip. Dealers don't stock 'em.

Have an EssentialSPEED overbored TB and shorty bundle of snakes tuned header ordered, and am looking at a pair of MazdaSpeed cams--unless I decide to get the intake only and switch the stock P5 intake to the exhaust side. Some issues apparently have come up with j-spec exhaust/intake combo--lumpy idle, possible emissions problems, etc., although one of our clan says the pair are excellent performers.

I'll pull a dyno run after each mod is installed and keep you all up to date on numbers. You might find them valuable.

That was going to be my question: What's a stock one pull? Did the author of this thread lay down any base numbers before the mods?

Chaoticspeed Feb 19, 2004 10:37 AM

so the cai and cat-back combo only gave you 2 hp? that doesnt seem right. your stock no.'s must have been lower than phantoms.

What's the general concensus on DTL with these cars? I know it's 15% on my RWD.

I gotta question guys... Where would I find an updated ECU or one thats better for my MP5 automatic? I don't have any mods but would like to start. Any websites or places to go to?

Gino-Does the Dyno take into account your altitude? I've heard that N/A engines produce 17 percent less hp at 6000'.

gino Feb 23, 2004 01:54 PM

Lethlchem, Arapau--

You asked about baseline and altitude correction on my P5 dyno runs.

1) The baseline, unfortunately, is the pair of numbers I quoted, one of which, BTW, is slightly off--torque was 114.84, so make it 115 rounded to the closest...BFD.

I failed to locate a dyno that didn't cost an arm and a leg for non-tuning runs before I hung the CAI and the CB. The dyno sheets posted by Injen and MagnaFlow quote HP and torque increases that I can't confirm without a dead stock baseline, which I don't have.

2) The dyno I'm using is constantly corrected for changes in temp and humidity, and is set for the altitude constant at which it runs. I can get uncorrected numbers, but they mean nothing. The owner of MACAutosport where I run the pulls, is very careful to make sure all settings are "on" before dyno runs are made.

As to less power at altitude, no doubt. The difference in air density at 5300 feet is considerable--I don't have the fiddle factor at hand. This why your ride is always quicker at sea level; my modded 2.0L Alfa Spider has more than proven that.

Hope this helps.
