"drifting"
 

my friend told me about an intereting driving technique on how to save quiet a bit of gas when driving on long streaches of road or the interstate, it goes a little something like this:

(the car in question is an automatic)
once on the streach of road, accelerate to roughly 10-15mph above the speed limit (or I guess this can be any speed you want to general crusie @) once you get about 10-15MPH over where you wana be, switch the car out of Drive mode and into neutral mode.. the idea I guess is that since the car in Neutral it can "drift" or "cruise" for quiet a distance since you've given yourself about 10-15mph to spare... and the fact that in N the car runs about 5-700RPM instead of 2,000-3,000 is what gives the better gas milage. When the car gets to the point where it's undesirably slow.. simply put the car back into drive and repete the process..


what I wana know... is if this can do any harm to the transmission.. I've known some people that do this daily swear up and down it doesen't.. but something tells me switching from N to Drive and just the fact that you're running in N for so long isn't all that good for the trans.Anyone have any insight?

this does NOT save gas, and yes it can be harmeful to the transmission if done repeatedly

Speeding up to 15 MPH above the speed limit will burn more gas than you're saving while coasting..

Wanna save a little gas? Check the air pressure in your tires and fill them up to the proper PSI. :)


BTW: You can't say "drifting" unless your car is RWD. :D

Yes Lozz, you was right! I am not an auto transmission mechanic, but I was told by someone who is. The oil pump in the transmission is dependant on engine rpm. When you are traveling down the road in neutral, the pump is turning more slowly because your engine is idling. The gears in your transmission are traveling more quickly because they are attached to the driveline, which is still moving at highway speed. This causes insufficient lubrication to your gears and clutches, and will wear out faster from lack of oil (ATF).

Not to mention that if a deer or something jumps in front of you, you won't be able to accelerate around it if you're in neutral. The split second it takes you to shift the car back into drive could cost you.
