Considering Mazdaspeed

Hi guys I'm new to this board, and I just wanted to ask you mazda folk a couple of questions if ya don't mind.

I currently dirve a nissan SE-R SpecV, and while I love the car I have been having somemajor problems with it. I'm on my seccond tranny and things are not looking great for it now.
I am currently in the process of trying to get nissan to by back my car. So that leads me to a new car (again...so soon)! So I have been looking around for cars at about 20k.
Looked at (before I got my SpecV) the SVT focus, Civic Si, VW GTI. I got the spec because I liked the styling and it was really fun to drive.
Now I see the new mazdaspeed protege' and they finaly gave it some power! Now, i know there are only 2000 so if I want to get one i probably need to act fast, but is there no way I can test drive it before putting down a deposit on it? And in reality how hard will these be to get?

Im really considering going with this so any info you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like to know what kind of power you guys get from boltons like I/H/E ,cams and such...

2nd tranny!!! bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

ahem, excuse me! so, just keep going down to the local mazda dealer(s) and keep buggin them about it. the release date has yet to be set, and the dealers that will be selling them has yet to be released yet. see if your dealer will keep you informed about the release, and if you can get a refundable deposit made when they annouce who can sell them. also, keep checking mazdausa.com for updates.

I know no one knows specifaclly about the new Mazdaspeed, but how do the n/a engines respond to bolt ons?
Are there alot of aftermarket parts companies?

**edit** also, how much HP is the engine good for on stock internals? I would geuss 250-275whp, but then again I know nothing about mazdas...YET.

I've read on this forum (do a search) that Mazdaspeed had the stock Protege motor up the boost to 300+ hp on stock internals, but the tranny couldn't handle that much power, so they toned it down to 170.....

or so that's what I've read on this forum ;)

In Canada the MS protege will run you to $25-28K.

Sorry to hear about that, do you have a auto or manual? Check into your local Lemon Law (im sure you probably did already), I know someone who owned a Ford Focus, and they had to replace the alternator about 6 times, as well as a number of other parts. He finnally got the Ford dealer to trade his car for another. Lemon Laws protect consumers, but sometimes its hard to prove your story...

As far as how the MS responds to bolt ons this is what I think: first mod should definately be a 2.75 inch mandrel bent exhaust from the TURBO FLANGE back, not from the cat back. This mod alone should free up some lost hp as well as raise the boost a couple of psi. In the MR2 community it is generally accepted that 1 extra psi of boost = 12 crank hp on the stock turbo. Apply this to the MS Protege and you have 200 crank hp without breaking a sweat. From there I would think about raising the boost further up to about 12psi and adding a bigger IC + the fuel syste mods that will be require to support the higher power level. At this state you should have about 250 crank hp. Adding an intake will likely do nothing but help spool up a bit and add some wicked sound!

So there you have a 250 crank hp car without oppening the motor and only spending about 1K USD... sweet! That's the joy of turbo's. Now hopefully the engine internals and tranny can take it! ;) Personally I'd be surprised if the FS-DE will last very long at 250hp, I'd stick to about 200hp and be safe. Good luck getting warrantee if you've modified the turbo system.

FYI the GT25 should easily support 300 crank hp so I wouldn't even think about ugrading it.

PS - damn this turbo talk has got me wanting an MS... too bad us Canadians are stuck with barf orange.

I agree with the previous post, but I wouldn't expect too much out of the T25. Sure it's boost none the less, but I think that the little Garret T25 will run out of steam once you hit 5500rpms much like the WRX does. I'm in no way bashing the MS-P or the WRX, but once people face other worthy challengers on the streets and on tracks, they'll start to realize that they'll want more top end power. I'm sure the T25 will be sufficient, but a slight larger turbo will be more fun.

Only 1750 in US and 250 in Canada. They will sel out be4 they hit the showrooms I guarantee it. The MP3 did and it wasn't running around with 170hp. If you currently have a mazda (more specifically a pro) you can prolly get bumped up in the list to get one.

Lemon laws are good but very hard to use. your car has to be in teh shop for the same reason like 3 times w/in a certain time period (6 monthes i think)

and scroll to 681.104 Nonconformity of motor vehicles.--

This is for florida but keep in mind you have your work cut out for you. You have to file mad petitions and hire a lawyer cuz chances are you will go to court for it. They won't take the car back willingly and you may be in it for at least 6 months.

That is, of course, if they wont outright buy it back. Stranger things have happened.

Anyhow, if you can get your hands on the MS do it, the aftermarket is gonna be crazy, and that's reason enough!!

If one wants to upgrade perhaps MS will put together a GT30 kit! :D MR2 Turbo owners are pushing 400 WHP out of the dual bb GT30 turbo... imagine the hell ride that would be in FWD Protege!!!

Lawerence August-14th-2002 10:47 AM

Well, I'm going to put a deposit down later today.
I would still like to drive it before i shell out all my $$$$.

It would be sweet but never from the factory. When's the last "supercar" you saw come out in the US. By this I am comparing USDM to JDM. We can't even touch the Silvia, Skyline factory market.

Also, mazda will never do it. They wouldn't be able to find a tranny and upgrade the other parts to handle 400hp (hell they wont prolly go past 200) and ever dream of keeping their 3 year warrantee intact. After all, that is what this is all about.....the warrantee.

KrisA August-14th-2002 11:58 AM

I was thinking more along the lines of MS aftermarket complete with warnings of voided warrantee.

You mean aftermarket price or aftermarket parts?

If you mean parts---> I figure their wont be to many aftermarkets parts, since only 2000 will be made. Why would companys spend all their time/money when only 2000 people have the car. Look at the Civic, since everyone and their dog has one, there is a big aftermarket.

Correct me if im wrong, just wondering.
