CD player "rejects" CDs!!

Hi all,

My Mazda's factory fitted CD player started lately rejecting the audio CDs... !! The little screen says "Check CD" .... I used a cleaning kit today and it accepted the cleaning CD and done cleaning.... but still rejects the CDs it used to play till last week!!

What I have done so far:

1- made sure the CD's are clean / no damaged
2- Cleaned the CD player using a standard cleaning kit

So... here's the question? Why is it doing this?

Another question.... Anyone knows how to take the whole unit (CD, Radio and Cassette player) off the dash.,... I wana have a look inside!

Some photos below... and thanks in advance:)

check your cd mabye its very dirty or scratched badly (happens to mine once in awhile)

Maybe your head unit has different musical tastes than you do...

Trig March-4th-2005 05:17 PM

Thanks guys for your replies :) ... But I tried NEW clean CDs and after several trials (slipping the disk in) the head unit played the music...

I guess it is a mechanical problem ! Anyone knows how to remove the unit out ?

KagyMP5 March-4th-2005 05:21 PM

the 2 skinny black pieces that are on the side of the unit, pop those off. then there should be 2 holes on each side you can get 2 ford head unit removal tools or you can make them yourself OR what i did was use 4 allen wrenches to depress the clips that hold the unit in.

IDK if it works on the import version but the pics look similar to me

there is all the info in the audio section of the forum with very detailed instructions mine are pretty vauge

Worst Case senario, either upgrade to a aftermarket, or if your under warrenty take it in to Mazda they will give ya a new one. If your out side of warrenty and want to keep the original look, let me know, i have two I have 2 almost new units with about 3 weeks of use on them, and still have the protective plastic cover on the screens, and they elmuminate Red/orange color,

I have seem some that have a yellow background color,

Let me know if your interested

One of them was a warrenty replacement for my old deck that i had replaced underwarrenty, lol my CD got stuck in there and they said the unit was toast , lol so they gave me a new one, thats the second time that happend, the other one came out of my second protege after upgrading aftermarket

@ KagyMP5, thanks alot for the instructions... will have a go at removing the unit asap :)

@ Omron, thanks mate for the offer... The car is no longer under warranty, and I want to keep the original unit (Radio and cass. player are fine)... I'll have a go at finding the fault... if not I know who to contact ;)

well are your cd's burned cd (not literally burned)

because alot of radios ect. do not accept CD-R's or CD-RW's

jbiird317 March-5th-2005 08:36 PM

totally off topic, but i wish i could get a RH drive MP5 over here, my freind is after a RH drive skyline, and i wanna show him that mazda's got some power too...ive got the 00 protege, and i would kill for that MP5, so consider yourself lucky that youve got the MP5 and get the aftermarket cd player, its well worth your while as far as sound quality goes anyway

Trig March-6th-2005 01:33 PM

@kmaalfiisa, almost correct ;) The "rejection" problem started with the CD-Rs that I used to burn... they were data CD-Rs... but then I got Audio CD-R and burnt my favourite songs.... it worked for few months and sadly now the CD player ejects my "burnt" CDs as well as the "orignals" ! ... Actually today the CD player accepted some CDs (orignals and burnt) after few trials of pushing the CDs in...

I am still thinking it's a mechanical problem where dust accumulated over time INSIDE the CD player tray and MAY obstruct the mechanism to TURN the CD when it starts... I want to add that the "rejection" happens after sometime of inserting a CD (about 15 seconds!)...

@jbiird317 ... RHD MP5 is called FAMILIA in Japan... they can be imported (as I did) from Japan or UK... Australian have them too :)

i have an idea but you should remove the unit completely from the car. once the unit is out of the car take an aircompressor (or canned air if thats what you have avaliable) and blow the piss outa the thing. then see if it works if not try some contact cleaner. I use LPS CFC Free electro contact cleaner I got mine for 11.49 +tax at ace hardware. just make sure u let the player air out and dry before u plug it in unless u want to have a melted cd player or have a fireball shoot back at you (this stuff is very very very flammable. Heres a little bit of the bright red warning: EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, DO NOT USE ON ENERGIZED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT OR EQUIPMENT IN OPERATION) good stuff huh

yeh all it is, is your laser went out....the reason it started with cd-r's is because of the way your burner writes to the disk, they are more difficult to read then a store bought cd, but now its just shot.....could be a build up of dust, but most likley youll have to replace it.....

Omron March-6th-2005 03:19 PM

if i were you i would becareful, sometimes you might cause more problems with that.

glyph_99es March-6th-2005 08:02 PM

that's how mine went out, of course it took 4 years to go, first. I just got an aftermarket that I could hook up my ipod to.

rcefstsfecr March-6th-2005 09:18 PM

My aftermarket will have problems if the temperature is different between the CD and the player. For example if the car is cold in the morning and I've just brought the CDs from the house to the car they won't play. If the car is warm from sitting in the sun and the CDs are under my seat (where it isn't so hot) they also won't play.
